    24-70mm f/2.8 Nikkor..

But, you may find the f/2.8 is not as handy as an f/1.4 prime if the church is dark

Like Msmoto said 24, 35, 50 or 85 1.4 prime is better option at dark church. Which one is your pick depends on what is your position at the church. 24 might be ideal allaround solution for dx but expensive. The new Sigma 35 is the next best thing. If you know you are going to shoot from the back 85 is workable but the key with all these lenses is knowing where and what you are going to shoot. If you just shoot wide shots and sort of athmosphere candids nothing is too wide. If you need the classical portrait framing from moments like the exchanging of the rings then you need to get close too. If you have any kit zooms like 22-200 or 18-105 go to the church where you are going to shoot the wedding and test what focal lenghts work best before buying new gear.

the 24 -70 is an fx lens

    You would be better off with the Nikon 17 - 55 f 2.8 f 1.8

but for a lot less money the Nikon 35mm f 2.8 should be fine

I have a friend who shoots a lot of wedding with a D7000 and this the lens he uses, if he cannot use flash in the church

My guess is that you meant 35mm f1.8 seven.

Same goes for 85: Save 200 % of the price by getting an 85/1.8 which is only 1/2 less fast but easier to carry and full open not worse than 1.4.

If you're looking for a zoom, please consider Sigma 17-50/2.8 which comes with OS, contrary to the old, double as expensive 17-55 from Nikon. "Consider" doesn't mean "buy", but it's worth to have a closer look. As well the new 17-70/2.8-4 "Contemporary", also with OS or the also new 30/1.4 "Art" (don't go for older models!) if you think you'll stick with DX. The 35 is for FX and really a nice beast.

If you stay with DX you might as well get the 35mm 1.8.

I own several of the lenses mentioned and I don't know what I would shoot. I like my Nikon 17-55 but it usually isn't long enough for me. Except for wide angle use my personal preference would almost be the 24-70. Hard to suggest just one lens though...a 1.4 or 1.8 prime is probably the best option but you are going to miss shots with that I think. Weddings are somewhat dynamic and I would personally bbe afraid to shoot one without a fast zoom.

    oops yes

combined with 18-105 ( or a 18 -200) a 10-24 plus a spare body and a couple of SB 910s you are all set to be a wedding photogrpaher
    :) :) :)

For sure...the 17-55mm Nikkor is f/2.8 and the 35mm DX Nikkor is f/1.8....

35mm 1.8 on a D7000 has a lot of CA when wide open. It is a decent lens and fantastic for the money ($199?) But the CA will probably put a hurtin' on your photos if you can't get close enough with it, especially if you have to push above ISO800 on that D7000.

If you can use a prime, go with a 50 or 85mm f/1.8 (f/1.4 if you have the funds.) Otherwise, I would go 17-55/2.8.

Oh, and also, remember that with the 35mm/1.8 your focus area is ridiculously small at f/1.8-2.0, it opens up quite a bit at f/2.2.

The CA is very easy to fix in post...which I'm sure anyone doing any wedding photography will conduct.

The 35 1.8 is a great lens and you should have it in your bag if you have the DX body....Period!. Moreover, all the 1.8's are fantastic on a DX body.

With in the 2.8 range, if the funds are available and you seek to move up to FX some day, then by all means consider getting the 24-70 2.8. The results are outstanding.

    Happy shopping....
