Not real sharp. We were driving by in the pop-top land rover, in shade, with no VR. Very hard to get. As soon as we stopped he flew away. The night before my D5000 took a 12" dive to hard tile. The focus ring had a light "snag". Took a while to work out. Lesson-Don't drop your camera the night before your safari. Out of the best burst from my D5000.

My apologies for not keeping up with my own thread. Family, school and work have eating all of my time. Another gear related tip is rent the gear you want to bring. If you think you can rent gear online and have delivered in country, think again. It will take weeks or months to get there and may have to clear the county-of-entry customs which can take weeks. Djibouti's FedEx and DHL took two weeks for anything to clear customs.
Be sure to rent to cover all of your travel time and possible delays in travel + insurance :-bd
Just remember to test your gear before you leave.

Thanks @Dredden85 for this thread. Lots of great insights here from your experience that resonate with my travels to East Africa as well. Great photos too!

I am still new to this forum, so if this isn't the correct way to share my images please kindly redirect me, but here are a few from Tanzania, taken in 2009:

A giraffe on the road heading to the Ngorongoro Crater

Those are some of my favourites from Tanzania, but of course I took quite a few more while there! :)

@henryvs: PAD (Photo-A-Day) is the way to show your pictures on NR, you can post one picture per 24 hrs - read the sticky posts at the top of the forum page to see it, the rules and instructions on how to do it.

@henryvs -Thank you for your kind words. I looked over your shots and they are great. Our tour was very time driven and I wish we could have stayed in one area longer to explore the local culture more. Please share your experiences and your lessons learned, so that this thread can be a good guide for those wishing to plan a trip over Africa. ;)

"It's another of those strange American phrases like 'I could care less' which is American for 'I couldn't care less'...."

I had a Lebonese friend in College who loved all of our sayings. His personal favorite was "when the shit hits the fan", He new what it meant and said the image of that made him laugh.

Thanks @ChasC ! The refuge was just five miles from my work while I was there. These Cheetahs had been injured in the wild and rehabbed here. Most they are able to rerelease to the wild but these I have photographed are permanent residents due to they are too accustomed to humans.

Why did you choose a D5000/Tamron ? Seems to be opposite to all the advice given.
By the way that's not a Land Rover.
