Any one that have tried that combination? How is the AF working? I think the perfect combo would be a 1.7. But the current 1.7 is not aspheric so I need to wait until 1.7iii or is the 2.0iii working fine? That will be a 800mm with AF. Pretty amazing... if it works...

yes I have tried that combination with the tc-20e iii
The results are rubbish, AF sort of works but IQ is considerable worst than cropping ( the light is going through too much glass)
IMHO : with a D800 + any TC + any zoom, you are better off cropping
the only exception might be the 200 -400 f4

I think TCs belong to days of film

    ( others will disagreed)

BTW The new 80-400 is a fantastic lens with no TC

I just came back from the 150th Gettysburg re-enactment shooting almost entirely with D800E and 80-400G.

For the further shots I set the function button to switch between FX and DX crop.

Performance of the lens / auto focus system is awesome, particularly 3D continuous AF for the cavalry melee's .

I wouldn't use any 2X TC on a zoom, they are designed to be used with high quality primes only.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.
