Creating Watermarks for Use in Aperture (w/o Photoshop)

Hi, all. The interesting thread about social media terms of use reminded me of a question I've been meaning to ask: does anyone have a simple way to make a watermark to use in Aperture, without Photoshop? The web has several suggestions, but all those I've been able to find rely on freeware or apps that no longer seem to exist in the form they were in when the advice was written. So I remain at a bit of a loss.
