White Balance setting

I'm hoping someone is familiar enough to know where I'm going wrong: I'm trying to set the White Balance, but the category is shaded inactive. When i push it anyway, I get a message that's gone so quickly I don't have a chance to read it. But it's something about this setting being unavailable.

I have my card roles set to Jpeg on one card, RAW on the other, Jpeg set to hi-res & RAW set to minimum compression. Does it have anything to do with that?

The White Balance setting is not available in SCENE or Auto exposure modes. You can change it when in P, S, A or M modes.

Thank you! I was all over the manual. All I needed was that bit of information, couldn't find it.

If you will download your manual from the Nikon web site and save it, you will find when opened it has a search function. This allows you to search for a word and find all the answers easily.
