Recommendations for 7100 bracketing HDR video/tutorial?

Hi,

I've been checking around on youtube and google for an informative tutorial on bracketing, as I really want to get heavy in to the HDR aspects of the camera. I have yet to find anything that is specific to the 7100 that walks you through the process.

Does anyone know of something out there that helps with this?

thanks!!
Dave

Instead of thinking of shooting HDR in camera, think about taking bracketed shots and processing them yourself. It's been a while since I've been there, but I think that Photomatix has a pretty cool explanation. I think you're going to find that HDR on the computer is far superior to in-camera HDR.
For starters, shoot metered, then one shot each +/- 2.0 EV. Some people use up to 9 images. I usually don't use more than 5. Your 7100 can bracket up to 5 shots with a variation of up to +/- 3 EV. If you want to use more than 5 you're going to need to shoot manually and adjust the shutter speed yourself. (aperture shouldn't be changed in this case)
And make sure you switch auto focus off.

    P. 115 in the manual gives the info for in camera HDR. but for the real thing, one must shoot several exposures. One of the mods, Golf007sd, will no doubt comment as he has demonstrated some very nice HDR.

Proudgeek has given you the basics. And, I have done a couple with the in camera mode, but these are in no way comparable to well done multiple image shots put together in post processing.

ok, so I think I got one to work. I still need to better understand the steps using the D7100, but I managed to get it to work twice: https://www.dropbox.com/s/hkl2tvru7j1o8v3/strat.jpg

now I just need to figure out how people are getting all those amazing colors. I don't seem to be able to work with each individual exposure in photoshop, or I should say I'm assuming that's how it's being done-

@spraynpray... I googled that phrase-is that the book by peach pit press, or something else?

    THANKS!

    Hi all,

To be clear, in camera shots are done in jpg mode only, and only 'one ofs', that is one at a time.

That is set the camera on jpg mode, HDR, take the shot, then repeat - you can't do another HDR until you go to the menu and select HDR again.

I would recommend the (A) mode for aperture mode to control depth of field.

Best if done on a tripod - the blur of the long exposures might be objectionable.

    My best,

    Mike

@tiCreativeMedia: Hello Dave, you hunger for photograph is welcomed here. Getting into HDR is very rewarding but it is not that an easy process. You need to have a strong foundation on many photographic techniques, such as: composition, understanding of the lighting conditions, proper exposure, post processing, etc..etc.

Get to know your D7100 by shooting about 2000-3000 images with it, so you have a comfortable base with its operation. Invest your time in it for know. In a few weeks if not months, you will see the difference in from your first few hundred shots and how you took those images, to the last few. If you invest your time correctly, you will see an huge difference. Share some of your images...that you are happy with, thus allowing us to give you some feed back via PAD (Photo-a-Day) and then I....we, will guid to in how to take and produce HDR like these.

    Cheers....

thanks @Golf007sd. I just tried adding my first photo to that section, but failed miserably. Where should I look for instructions on posting to that page? I can't figure out how to get the photo to show up.

    thanks-

With the d7000 there was a way to setup the u settings for braketing one for + and one for - it should work the same on the d7100.

The times I have done HDR I prefered 9 shots just because. With the d800 i dont do that as much.
For HDR processing look into NIK software now owned by Google

    Hi all,

In the FWIW category, working with Photoshop CC to export a RAW image to several JPG images and Bridge's Tools to export an HDR of those to working file for Photoshop. It works quite well, too, although it's not an expensive option.

Paintshop Pro has an excellent 'Export Single Raw' file to HDR photo since version 5 (I think, it could be earlier) and it works great. I use it a lot.

From PSP X6's Manager and right click the RAW file and select HDR, Single RAW Exposure. The rest is in the application.

    My best,

    Mike

    Thanks Everyone-

I have purchased both Photomatix Pro, and the Nik Suite.

In this set of photos, I've used both tools on a few of the shots.

THANKS for all the great tips!
