it looks good for the money but i cant say that i would buy one, i would prefer my Zeiss 35mm f1.4 T* Distagon, it's a manual focus lens but it blows the nikon lens out the water.

How useful is VR on a short focal length? Extra dollars, something else to break. Not sure I find that appealing.
Very useful for low light especially for those who didn't receive the ultra steady hand gene. The D800 will show any movement unlike the sub 20mp days where just due to the resolution, you could get away with some.
Any real world low light situations where VR on 35mm or wider would be helpful?
I can only think of doing hand held night landscape shots.

To get the best shot at night, regardless of the lens, I highly recommend taking the shot by using a tripod vs. handheld. This will allow you to use lower ISO and long exposures.

As best I can tell the primary difference between the Zeiss and Nikkor is the Zeiss has less CA, Other wise they are very close.

The Nikkor looks superior on the MTF charts.

As with all glass, we each have our preferences for the final result. For my money in the 35mm range, the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 is the best.

@fatmanmedia: This topic is about the new Nikon 35mm 1.8. Lets try to compare apples-to-apples, as it relates to the focal length and aperture....not to mention price as well.

    For sure, Golf. The Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 is over $1800. The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 $900 and the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 $600.

I would suggest for anyone who could handle the extra $300, the Sigma is a serious consideration.

From the Digital Rev review it seems like the 35mm 1.8 FX isn't much of a performer. Not a great lens, but not terrible either.

I would say just go for the Sigma then.

@NSXTypeR: +1 I totally agree...if you have a FX. It is the one to get.

However, if you have a DX....save the cash and get the Nikon 35 1.8 DX. That lens is Fantastic. In fact, it is permanently mounted on my D7000.

I had the 35mm F1.8G DX when I shot DX, never was all that impressed with it beyond center area sharpness. Nasty bokeh and CA wide open meant it needed to be stopped down to be useful. Sounds like the new FX model isn't much better, from the reviews I've seen. Not a big deal to me, since I'd much rather see a refresh of the 24mm F2.8D anyway.

If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

Oh yes, I love the 35mm 1.8 DX to bits. Best lens purchase I've done. A real no brainer upgrade.

I would like an updated 24mm too, because I want a 35mm equivalent on DX. At 2.8 it shouldn't be too expensive. I hope.

NSXTypeR and Golf007sd..I currently have the 35mm F2 AF D lens and use it for general photos at parties and of our grand kids. It's about four years old. Should I consider selling my 35mm F2 and buy the 35 1.8 DX lens? Should not be too hard to sell on eBay and Craig's list.

If you're planning to stay with DX for the long run, then I would say why not. If you're happy with your results now, you can just stick with the older 35mm F2.

I've never used the 35mm F2 so I can't say how I like that lens, but the 35mm 1.8 DX was the second lens I got and probably one of the best purchases I've ever made.

@Photobug: Given the 35 1.8 DX cost...it is a no brainer to have in your bag.

I looked at my 35 1.8dx with D7000 the other day while looking thru the archives. I still like the lens and it did have the dark corners syndrome but it is fixed in lighroom in a breeze.
It was one of my favorite DX lens and it was a no brainer.
Knowing what I know now I would have started out with FX but that came and went and never happened but the 35 1.8dx was the best prime I had and now the Sigma 35 1.4 A is the best prime I have. .
