Stay with D5100 or move up to D7100?

I mainly shoot my kids' basketball games with a Sigma 50-150 f2.8 at 1/500 1600ISO and no flash. The results are acceptable for posting on webpages with in-camera crop and d-lighting boost, but not as sharp as I when I shoot outdoor. Will moving up to the D7100 yield better results in terms of low-light performance? BTW, I only shoot jpeg and sometime do get an unfocussed picture. Thanks.

Yes, from comments made by those who own a D7100 I would expect you to see significantly improved images at ISO 1600. It should be well worth the cost.

Aye. What Donald said. I have the D7100 and it is worth the upgrade alright.
    Always learning.

@tixin - I just got the D7100 and I love it. But that really means nothing as I don't have much to compare it to, other than the D3000! :))

My suggestion to you, if this is not something you need for 'tomorrow', is rent the thing. Use it with the equipment you have. Rent that lens you've been drooling over and use it with the D7100 and your current camera. Most importantly, try it out in those environments were you are comfortable and compare the shots.

Ignore the experts and the beginners and look at what you produce. Are you happy? Are the dollars spent worthwhile?

Excellent decisions. Check out B&H. They are including $92.40 in freebies plus 4% back to use for future purchases. Also suggest you check out Adorama. Both are excellent dealers with great reputations.

Then come back and starting posting on PAD. Also welcome to NRF.

I went from D5100 to D7100. Trust me, the difference is night and day. Really. There are so many things the D7100 has over the D5100 it's amazing. The only thing I miss is the articulated screen.
    Nikon D7100; AF-S DX 35mm f1.8; AF-S DX Macro 40mm f2.8; AF-S DX 18-200mm VRII; SB-700 Speed Light and a bunch of other not very noteworthy stuff......
