Finding bulb mode on Nikon D5000?

We cannot set the D5000 to "bulb" mode for long exposure. The instructions in the manual (around page 84) seem simple:
Rotate dial to "M"
Rotate the command dial until “Bulb” appears in the viewfinder or information display
This doesn't work - "bulb' never shows up. I haven't found this problem discussed anywhere else, so what are we doing wrong?
Also, we messed around with the settings pretty extensively trying to find this. We reset them as on page 153:
"custom settings menu" - "reset custom settings" - "yes"
I'm really hoping that worked.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

This will allow you to open the shutter for as long as you want without shaking the camera. The trigger button has a slide lock on it.
For those of you detailed enough to see that it is not the correct one for my D800, Bravo! But I have the GP-1 plugged into my 10 pin connector and this connects to the GP-1.
