D800 refresh, either D800ES or D900

Hi,

Any idea if the D800 refresh would include U1 and U2? That would be a stellar sellout camera if it will be one of its features aside from new processor and updated AF points.

Since there are no leaked images, we have no way of knowing. That said, no high end Nikon bodies use a model dial, so it is unlikely.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

The D800 has unlimited custom set-ups. You just have to set it up. It is missing a couple of "static" options as do the lower models. It would be nice from them to fix that.

It won't be a D900 - There is no other "Xoo" available for a new system. D810 is what it will be named.

Admin was suspecting it to be a D800s.

I really love the ability to have three settings, my normal Aperture priority mode, U1 and U2. Can the Function button be set up for one of the customer set-ups?

There are four custom setting banks, which can be added to the my menu. Sadly they cannot be added to a Fn button. :(

Doesn't matter whatever nikon calls it I am just hoping it would include U1 & U2 since it's a very useful tool... I know there are custom blanks u can set up but it's not as convenient as having outside easily accessible buttons. I know high end models doesn't have these options but I mean canons 5D III which is D800 nemesis has C1,2, & 3... Just hoping that nikon will add these very useful feature...

Can someone please explain to me the need to switch to C1 to C2 so quickly that you need a dial? I just don't get it.

If this refresh is just the new focus system and maybe a few more fps, I think it will make a lot of people happy. But for the majority of D800 users I doubt it will be worth the upgrade.

It's quick to do if you can just a dial and get a preset instantly. I can see the merits of that in a pro body.

That being said, I'm not sure how quickly you can change presets inside the menu system.

C1 and C2 are for canon, its U1 and U2 for nikon. Basically their functions are the same. As what NSXTyper indicated above you can preset settings and saved them and with a flick of a dial you can immediately access the saved settings without going to the menu setting. Lets say for landscape photos you have narrow aperture, low ISO and so on, you save it in U1 and for portrait you have a wide aperture, auto ISO etc., you save it in U2. So when you're shooting a scenery and decided to take a photo of your beautiful wife then you just switch the dial from U1 to U2 and viola you can just snap away without worrying about the settings. I hope this helps Emcee...

Fredericko, to get to the settings you describe (for me at least in Aperture mode) it's flipping both of the command dials a few turns and voila. And even if your U2 is set where you need it to be more than likely it's not going to be perfect so then you'd need even more adjusting.

I agree they could be useful but I'm still not sold.

Yeah, U1 and U2 sounds like a custom P mode to me. Good on a consumer grade camera but not on a pro grade. It would devalue the D800 in my view. "Less is more" in this case.

The thing I would pay more for would be a larger buffer, full frame focussing and radio triggers added to CLS. Pocket Wizards are expensive.

U1 and U2 are not at all custom P modes. The active shooting mode is totally unrelated. The U1 and U2 settings have more in common with the custom shooting banks on current pro bodies. The only difference is that the U1 and U2 modes save the settings, so if you make changes and go back later the camera will reset to the saved settings. The shooting mode can also be stored as part of one of those user modes.

Great response PB_PM on the U1 and U2 modes.

I like the idea of turning the dial to change shooting modes rather than digging into the menu system.

Personally I would just like to be able to set the "reset" to the defaults I want instead of what Nikon has.

I'm not sure if I'm on board with adding consumer options. Maybe as a menu item or a custom button function but certainly not as a dial.

There is a whole hell of a lot of other menu driven things I would like to see fixed before adding more stuff.

It would be simple for Nikon to add U1 and U2 to the mode button. They could have it as an option, which could be enabled/disabled in the menu.

I find U1 and U2 invaluable for changing from a normal mode to something like night shooting or star-trail set-up because there are so many changes to make it saves on errors and time. I see it only as a positive addition to the D810 if it happens.
    Always learning.

@spraynpray those are the settings that need to be adjusted depending on the situation you are in so yes you are right you might not benefit from U1 U2 in that situation. You have to be well prepared and focused with those type of photography, what I was thinking with having a U1U2 is when you're with your family and children and the urgency of the moment requires you to shoot from one setting to another then that's where U1U2 becomes very valuable. That would really be a good update from a D800 refresh =) I hope Nikon is reading this...
