For those of you that have ever wondered what is a good way to get proper exposure when dealing with very harsh sun light in condition where there is a lot of snow or bright sand then perhaps you should consider The Sunny 16 Rule.

For those that have used this method...by all means give us your input.

Cheers....

    Nice tips Golf. Maybe we should have a sticky thread for tips like this at the top of the forum?
    If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

    @Golf007sd

    I have this printed out to carry with the 4x5 as I don't use a light meter. It works well with C41 film. I try to keep it in my head but the gray hair is sapping my memory... Charts are available from both Kodak and Fuji film. That is where I printed mine from.

    I am bringing several pairs of gloves…... ;)

    For those who do not view videos…the sunny 16 rule says in sunlight, at f/16, the shutter speed is the reciprocal of the ISO (originally ASA). So, if one shoots at f/8, ISO 100, the shutter speed is ….1/400 the sec, or 1/500th for many. Actually one might use f/7.1 if you are shooting an old camera which has the shutter set up at 1/60, 1/125, 1/250, 1/500, etc.

    Or, ISO 400, f/16, 1/400…..clear? But, one must understand the subject matter…..dark objects, maybe 1/2 to 1 stop more for detail. And, if you shoot in shade it is 3 stops more exposure, but if you want it to look like shade, 2 stops more than in the sun…..se how clear this is?

    so basically it just a starting point and adjust as necessary?

    I just tend to set the aperture desired for that day either f/8 for buildings or 1.4-f4 for people if i want isolation and usually iso 200 or 100 if is too bright out.

    I haven't applied it but I will consider it if changes the way my photos turn out.

    Msmoto, I am not going to be there. Please use one of those pair of gloves to protect your hands and throw a snowball at Golf for me. I would appreciate it...especially if you hit him. \:D/

    Hi all,

    I just got back from teaching Adobe products in LA and would like stay in one place for a while.

    We have plenty of snow and an indoor pool party with some of the grandchildren here to keep us occupied.

    Love to see a photo of a snowball fight. Have fun in the sun!

    My best to all.

    Mike
