Baby Due Next Month-Wait for D7200 or Buy the D7100

The grass is always greener in the technology world. My wife and I are expecting our first baby next month, and we have the new camera bug. The wife really wants WiFi and GPS in a dSLR. With the current rumors of a D7200 having both functionalities, she wants to wait. I would rather have the D7100 in the next week or two, play for a couple of weeks to get familiar with the controls, and be photo-ready on Day 0.

I know NR says September for the D7200. What are your thoughts?

Unless she can hold off the birth until the D7200 is released, I'd go for the camera that actually exists. Otherwise, think of all the images you're going to miss. Even if the camera comes out in September, that in no way speaks to availability. At a minimum you're talking 5 months until you get a new camera.

True story. Several years ago I went on a trip to the Galapagos and befriended another photographer who had just purchased a D7000 two weeks prior to the trip. Late in the trip we were going through photos together and he was remarking that so many of his seemed to be either out of focus or focused on the wrong thing. So we pulled his manual out and it turned out he had his focus settings all wrong. You're only going to get that first yawn, first bath, first anything one time. Don't you want to have had the camera you're using to capture that in your hand for at LEAST several weeks so you're totally familiar with it?

Plus the D7100 is no slouch - you will not get the upgrade itch once you start to see what it can do.
    Always learning.

Yes buy the D7100 now and learn it. After buying the D7100 I waited for B&H to give me my 2% and then got the the WiFi adapter for $3 and change. It works very nice.

The last thing you want to do is wait for something that isn't released when you think it is going to be. Pay a premium price when it does come out. Miss pictures the whole time you thought you would have a newer camera. There are some good deals on refurbished D7100's right now...around $850. I almost purchased mine the other day, but I need to wait until I have more funds. And yes..there is always something new coming out...if your goal is to stay up with the newest and best then you will be poor and unhappy.

We have a D90 that I bought in 2009 along with an 18-200mm and 50mm. The D5300 is an option, but we have grown used to the control panel near the shutter release and the D7100 has improved autofocus, 2 SD card slots (split videos & photos) extra battery life, etc. And the "weatherproofing" and magnesium alloy body is an added bonus.

If the baby is due in a month, you might want to purchase the D7100 ASAP, test it out fully and be prepared for the wonderful event. The primary advantage IMO is in the ISO of the D7100. As a D90 owner, it is limited in hi ISO. You may want to obtain a new lens, my suggestion is a Sigma 35mm f/1.4 for wide shots and an 85mm f/1.8 Nikkor for the individual shots of your new baby. Or decide which one suits you better for your shooting style, then get it.

You are going to be highly emotionally charged when the birth occurs and this is a time you need to function automatically with the camera/lens. Best of luck.

@iceb86 new father here and again in 10 days.
Get the camera now. I had the d7000 when my daughter was born and few months later upgraded to D800.
I have her hospital pics, her first bath, etc etc.
Get it while you can still have some time to learn and take pics. The first few months you will be very busy and possibly have lack of sleep that you will not have time to learn the camera.

    Congrats on the baby

I agree with everyone that says get the body now. You will find the whole GPS to be the least of your worries. You can add the module to the D7100 when you find it necessary. As for WIFI...only works with JPG. I recommend shooting in RAW and downloading the images you want to your HD or other storage devices.

Even if the D7200 came out today, most likely you couldn't purchase one for at least a couple months. Nikon has gotten better with some products being available right after they come out but anything above the consumer level camera usually has to wait a few months before the average person can get one.

I agree the key question is what you have right now. If the D90, I would buy the D7100 now... the ISO improvement will be REALLY appreciated as you get more of the natural light photos. My wife has a D7100...you won't be disappointed.

Any insights on the additional features the D7200 will bring when comparing to the D7100?
  • PB_PMPB_PM Posts: 4,494Member
It's unlikely to have any major new features. It will likely have the same sensor and feature set, simply with GPS and WIFI built in.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

Releasing a new model just to add these items? If that is the case, I would definitely buy the D7100. The only problem is that once the D7200 is released, the D7100 will probably experience a price drop... I imagine something like USD 200.

GPS is cool when you import pictures to an iPad and it organizes by places. But, is it really necessary? :D

That was all that changed between the D5200 and D5300, besides some minor tweaking of movie recording capabilities.
