I slip my SB-910 into it and clamp it onto my RRS tripod. Voila. I have an off camera flash stand that can hold the flash up to 2 metres off the ground.
Here is a picture of it in action:
Why this instead of a light stand. Because I carry my tripod with me sometimes and it saves me from carrying both. Without the tripod, I would probably carry a lightstand, but the tripod is now more versatile.
RRS's service is great. I sent them an email ordering the part. They took 48 hours to respond and apologized like they had committed a mortal sin for taking so long (I also ordered a bag). I had broken the little plastic container that holds the bits in my RRS multitool kit, so they sent me two extra ones for free.
Then they noticed that on my original order, they forgot to give me a $40 discount that I did not even think of and threw that in too.
Which I will buy for general off camera flash use anyways so I will have these and the SB-910s. Might be a little heavy with this setup though. Does anybody have any other ideas?
My name is Bo, and I am an RRS addict... Seriously, more so than with lenses and cameras, I find that whenever someone shows me a nifty gadget from RRS I am making the order. They really really know how to make right stuff =D>
Gosh is there an RRSOA? (Really Right Stuff Owners Anonymous)
Well, I have now purchased my first piece of RRS, in lieu of a set of bellows for close focusing work. Of course I modified it…..actually, I put a black line on the main rail knob so it was easier to determine when I had completed one turn. The precision and workmanship of this piece are very nice.
@Msmoto: Welcome to the RRS world. Now that you have taken the first step, the next few will be much more easer and welcoming. Ball-head, tripods, nodal slides, panning clams....the list will grow and your level of happiness in using them will increase as well.
Lastly, please bring the macro rail with you in March so I can play with it and see if I will need one as well. :P

Come on Golf, just go on=line and order one. The macro rail is really excellent and it comes in a nice foam zipper case to provide some cushioning when traveling.

No, I am waiting until RRS comes out with a remote controlled version with stepper motors. It will be on a pneumatical tripod which levels itself. :-)

Hi Jurgen...I think you have had too much wine when you write that message. Got a nice laugh from your response.
Got to admit, their gear is really good and they do make improvements but a remote controlled version and jshickele's walk behind models is a long way off. LoL . :-))

No wine, I am one of the great visonares of our time. Picture those guys are sitting with their NRF T-Shirts in a pub in Freeport, Maine. One has a macro set-up home and they can collectively take 60 stacking shots remote through an iphone app (over a couple of beers). I would love that. :-) So, lets not hijack this thread. It's a good serious discussion about tripods. Jürgen
A lot of people love their RRS tripods AND a lot of people like their GITZO tripods. I just can't see selling my GITZO for an RRS. They are both outstanding tripods and IMHO, both make excellent monopods.
There, back on track.

I use my 17 yr old son. I nick named him Aziz (reference the movie Fifth Element).
I have a jogging stroller I purchased at a used sporting equipment store for $25 that I can shlep one of the big telephotos and my Gitzo/Wimberly combo with and put the rest in my backpack.
The recently aquired 200mm f/4.0 Micro that is in my signature needs support gear for my RRS tripod with the BH-55 ballhead. I am thinking of the following:
B2-LMT: Lens Mount for B150-B $135 B150-B Ultimate Pkg $650 MPR-73: 73mm rail $55

When I buy my 200mm F4, I will buy this:

and this:
http://www.reallyrightstuff.com/s.nl/it.A/id.5325/.f
and a couple of these:

to accomplish this (see the picture at the top):

Almost adds up to the cost of the 200mm F4, but it will a nice piece of kit.
I am thinking of putting my SB-910s on the end of the extenders with this:

and yes Tripods as light stands work great.
@WestEndBoy in your flickr pic i see how it attaches and clamps to the ball head. I was just curios of why not putting the plate on the speed light stand. perhaps it's safer I just want to know why you choose that route.
