    I think its more like a D4x and/or a D4s, then a few years later the D5 might happen.

Slightly off topic but might make a difference. I am not sure if Japan has a number that they do not use. For instance if you fly in the middle east you will not see a row labled 13 on any of the local airlines. Not sure if Japan has a number that is "bad". The fact there is an F5 I am pretty sure a problem wouldn't occur from this.

Death is associated with the number 4 in Japan. So don't panic.

    OK Panic

It is never too early... However the credibility of such rumors is another story...

Is it too early for the D5? What about the D6, D7 or D8? Of course it is. Use what you've got.
    Always learning.

    @Gareth

I thought in Japan the number 600 if misspelled translated as "disaster" LOL

OK, look for a D4x announcement in September.....

Love the reference to "disaster" for the translation of D600.

I would love to see a double header...a new DX and FX body. That would generate huge interest.

I would be curious to see how they accomplish 15 fps. With only 20 megapixels, data throughput should not be a problem. Focussing will be quite the accomplishment.

Some 170 focus points and 15 fps are a hint they may have something interestig and new up their sleeves.. Icould be ISO 100k will be the least innovative feature.

And the 2016 are in Rio. It's no secret that canon and nikon update their flagship pro cams in time for the summer Olympics every four years. The D6 will be out in time for the Tokyo Olympics, you can set your Seiko by it ;-)

@ 15fps I would guess that the mirror is gone. An EFV with 170 focus point over the whole screen. I've always thought the D5 could bring mirrorless to the pros. @ 15fps a electronic shutter could be in play.

If the mirror is gone, this will set the stage for the next generation of action pro bodies. I am wondering if the mirror returns only after two exposures, thus allowing 15 fps, but not exactly on an even rate.

The next question in my mind is what will be the price......$7,000 +???

For those who are actually making their living from photography, this should be very nice. For me, I have as yet to figure out how to use my "old" D4. :-B

Superior focusing is one of the three or four attributes that justify the existence of the Dx line. Nikon will never compromise that just to remove a mirror.

I suppose it is possible that they have made a breakthrough in sensor based focusing. But it would have to be a breakthrough, not a mere improvement.
  • IronheartIronheart Posts: 3,017Moderator
It will be a hybrid, both PDAF on the sensor and in the traditional AF module with a mirror. This will allow for faster focusing between mirror flaps, and faster live-view focusing. A win-win.
