@Tom B, you are probably right, myself included. I have a D4 and it does stand out for action photography. I've carried both the D4 and D800 to shoot Motocross and there is no comparison in my opinion. The D4 excels in focus and frames per second. The focus was most notable when trying to capture action. I have no experience with the D4s but those that own it seem extremely pleased. Now, how much action photography do I shoot? Probably not enough to warrant owning the D4.
You can - but remember the next Japan Olympics are in 2020!
And the 2016 are in Rio. It's no secret that canon and nikon update their flagship pro cams in time for the summer Olympics every four years. The D6 will be out in time for the Tokyo Olympics, you can set your Seiko by it ;-)
I have and love my D4 and D810. They are great for their intended purposes. Neither is a "travel camera." I may upgrade to the D5 just to have a new toy, but I certainly could not justify an upgrade by any logic other than "new toy."

The D5 is now available for pre-order in Denmark. No price. No specs. No release date. No delivery date. No picture ... only a constructed picture: surprise, it's black. http://webshop.goecker.dk/product/NIKDD5HUS
I too owned both the D4 and the D810 but the D4 just started to collect dust on the shelf so I sold it at a good price, to prevent the loss these cameras endure, have to say I don't miss it, and with the D810 plus the grip and the D4 battery in it, the FPS are acceptable.
I'm almost of the same mind set as paulr I use the D810 much more often than the D4. But, when the light levels are low (indoor sports) or high speed is a must, I still grab the D4.

With the native ISO of 100,000, if this looks like 12,800 on a D4, 3 extra f/stops....and with some of the events I shoot where there is minimal light yet fast moving subjects....could be interesting and once again makes the action shoots much easier.....IMO
However, another aspect of this is the price of a refurbished D4 or D4s will now drop into a range which allows many more folks to eat the caviar........
The D5 sounds like an interesting camera. I would be thrilled if the f/stop performance was 3 more relative to the Nikon D4 or D4s. I purchased a D4s a little over a year ago and for me to upgrade to (or add) the D5 I would need to see the following:
1) ISO 51200 on Nikon D5 equal to ISO 12800 on Nikon D4s 2) The new focusing system has sensors more widely spaced and is equally as fast if not faster than the D4s especially in low light. 3) A more robust shutter. If fps is increasing 50% (10 to 15 fps) the shutter better be rated out to 600,000 cycles.
I will also wait 2-3 months past the release date to purchase a unit to ensure that the initial batch do not have any QC issues. Lastly, with all of the changes being made in this camera I a strongly considering waiting two years and purchasing the Nikon D5S, which will have moderated mid-cycle tweaks. I will likely rent a D5 for a weekend in early Spring to test.

@jan - all good points. For those who have had their D4 for a long time it will be an easier upgrade.
@MsMoto - +1 on more individuals to eat the caviar.

I am very much interested in the D5 although I am not currently planning to be on the bleeding edge of acquisition. I will probably wait for reviews and to see if there are any problems. Nikon's recent history leaves much to be desired in QC. Nevertheless this looks like it will be a fine piece of hardware with very nice capabilities.
I am still trying to wrap my head around what it will be like shooting at 20 MP after shooting 36 MP for nearly 4 years. I like big prints and I like the flexibility 36 MP provides for cropping and composing. I really do want better ISO performance as the D800 and D810 have both disappointed.

Still say the D4 is more camera than 99% of us should have.
My thoughts exactly....the D4 works, the D800E in action....seems like about 2 FPS.....LOL
