The 18-55 VR II lens doesn't come with a hood, either in a kit or sold separately. The real deal HB-69 goes for $25 at adorama:
    http://www.adorama.com/NKHB69.html

First lesson for Nikon gear is that third party products are cheaper for a reason, the extra $14 will be worth it, return the JJC while you can. Or not and listen to it rattle for the next 5 years :P

Congrats on the new rig, happy shooting!

Probably as with most 3rd party products, it wont be perfect. It's a slight sound, not overwhelming, only when it set it down or when I move to fast does it do that rattle. Putting it on reverse and it's snug, doesn't move at all, so who knows? When the official lens is in stock, I will get one. I do wish they had two different lens hood options though. I do like the flower type design.

Look at the link. The official one is a petal design. Adorama has them in stock.

A real world shot out the car window with the D5300 at 1/320, f16, ISO 12,800, 105mm from an 18-140mm kit lens. VR on. Size normal jpg. Not near the noise I expected. Still this is territory for a D4 with the 70-200 2.8 lens. The kit lens was hunting focus while the piglets ran for the cover of the palmettos.

Ordered the official hood lens from Adorama, but it's on back order for me (cause I'm stateside I assume?) Waiting on my Mieke battery grip to show up, so far it's been sitting at Chicago IS USPS for a week...(not sure what's up with that. Scouting out zoom lenses for my camera. Currently having a spectacular time working with b/w photograpy and few color pieces here and there. Here is a link to a few recent images. Made a FB photo album with a public link for those that dont have facebook. Probably better than spamming images here on NR forums.

Alright! Here's my D5300 with the Meike battery grip. Looks great, and feels great. I also bought a used Tamron 75-300 telephoto zoom lens. Really having a blast with this camera and taking pictures. Practice Practice Practice.

I'm considering a combo for my camera since the lens and teleconverter are compatible with my D5300. The Nikon 300mm f/4.0D ED-IF AF-S with a Nikon TC-20E II (2.0x) Teleconverter AF-S. Any thoughts on this? Or Suggestions for a good telephoto/zoom lens for my DX for a beginner to start out at. There's so many options out there it's got me dizzy, haha. Im just not happy with my Tamron TC/teleconverter combo at all, images are not sharp and crisp. Any help on this wildlife/landscape realm would be appreciated. Thanks :)

The Nikon 70-300 is a way better lens than the Tamron. The 300 prime is better than both, but has no VR. If you are on a tripod, no prob. Teleconverters always rob light and sharpness. Better to get the 1.4 than the 2.0

Is this the Nikon 70-300mm your talking about? It isn't compatiable with the Nikon D5200, will it work with mine? Or is there an older model?

Yes that is the one, and it will work great on any DX or FX camera. I would buy it here:

Or from your local camera shop

Looking up a flash for my camera. Considering the SB-600, not sure if it's compatible with my camera as an auto flash or not.

    The SB-600 should work.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

Also check the Nikon USA site for refurbished SB-700s. They went on sale about 7 to 10 days ago.

I am looking at purchasing a D5300, and I am looking at a costco kit that includes both a 18-55 and 55-300 VR lenses. Digital SLR's are new to me so I am trying to learn on a curve here. I have an Nikon N90S for which I have a Tamron 28-80 and 75-300 AF lenses, will those work with the D5300? Should I maybe buy the kit with the 18-140 instead?

For the record I have shot a lot of film in the past, everything from 4x5, to my Medium Format Bronica ETR, to my Nikon N90s. I shoot a little bit of everything from portraits to landscapes to macros, any help would be appreciated.

@Gr8dave37 Your older lenses will not work with the D5300, since it does not have the screw driven focusing motor.

You might be better off getting a body only kit and buying the right lenses for what you want to shoot.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

Thanks for that. As with most people, money is an issue so I'm trying to get the most bang(lenses) for my buck. Since my old lenses won't work, the real debate is on which kit to get then, the 18-140 or the 18-55 and the 55-300..

The 18-55 and 55-300mm will give you the most flexibility, so on a tight budget I'd go that route.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

+1 PB_PM IF the budget is tight this is the best option. If you have extra money I would go with the 18-140 when they are running that $300 off the kit price.

Was wondering....Is there a mode similar to a UV on any digital camera? or maybe this one in particular?

Nope to both, you're going to have to modify the camera permanently for that. Or get a Sigma SD1.
