mirror less (short flange) to mount my Leica Lenses.

How will you mount your Nikon lenses? I doubt Nikon would introduce an adapter to mount a competitor's lenses. However, if they came out with a new lens mount, that would be interesting.

I hear you on the square sensor. And a button to do it without going into a menu.
A short flange would allow Nikon to produce smaller lighter lenses for FL < 58mm since they would not have to be retrofocus.

It would then be in their interest to produce adapters for standard F-mount lenses.

Someone else will make the Leica adapters. Manual aperture and focus makes these simple.

Well the Df is what I was looking for and it's here!

I think a DX Df should be the next step. Keep a 16ish DX sensor. Lower price point to hit more customers. Get it into a FG sized body with D3200/D5200 options as the base. Price it at $1,200.

Also would give good reason to finally update the 2.8s (keep with FX), 18mm, 20mm, 24mm, 35mm, 45mm. (27,36,50, 68)

Hell maybe just make a FG Nikon 1 with retro looking 24,35,50,85,105 f/1.8 lenses. Retro sells. Actually I would probably pick that up.

Interesting line of thinking TTJ... It could be good positioning for Nikon if Df was a new line of cameras instead of a single camera.
    D700, 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII, 24-70mm f/2.8, 14-24mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.4G, 200mm f/4 Micro, 105mm f/2.8 VRII Micro, 35mm f/1.8, 2xSB900, 1xSB910, R1C1, RRS Support...

... And no time to use them.

For me the D800 is very close to perfection.
But given some more further technical advantages I would be dreaming of a
    - D4 or D800 body (solid, large and resting firmly in my large hands)
    - Control layout like D4 or D800
    - 56Megapixels sensor with the per pixel noice of the D4 (or better) and the dynamic range of the D800.
    - No AA filter
    - 16bit RAW
    - PitchBlack recombination on the focus points
    - All focus points with cross + X detection and usable up to f8 and -5 e.v.
    - 2 SD slots (I think SD is the future; as technology improves the difference between SD and the faster cards will disappear; SD is also much cheaper while still offering very good performance with the best cards)
    - 5fps burst mode with a 20 pictures buffer
    - the ability to bracket exposure with more then 1 e.v. difference per step
    - Priced like the current D800 (I can dream ;) )

This would just about be my perfect landscape/studio/portrait/... camera.
Sure, a lot of people would complain about the file size, the megapixel war, the limited burst speed, how slight the advantages between 14 and 16 bit color depth are, how the sensor outresolves the current lenses and how film still has better resolution.
I on the other hand would be enjoying the billboard sized 300 dpi image that covers the wall of my living room. ;)

Personally, mainly a D800 successor with:

    1. 6-8 fps and capable buffer

    and if possible
    2. the controls - layout of D300.
    3. more MP than 36 ...
    4. darken or semi darken the unused frame area in crop modes
    5. more cross focus points / focus points spread a little wider in the frame

That's what I'm kind of thinking - give options against Oly EM5, Fuji X series, and Pani GX7. You could do a DX mirrorless, Single focal length, Nikon 1 mirrorless, a P7800 style Adv compact, and even stylish compacts. Basically copy the business model Fuji is exploiting very well at the moment. There is just no one else in that market.

Pentax's Q series has a cult following as well. Actually I have thought about picking one of those up. It can do Holga, Diana, Lomo style quite well. Makes you focus on composition more - that is what I like to "practice" with the optional lenses, just gives you more options. Kind of a cheap/expensive P&S though!

Updated D700 with 16MB, no video, twin CF cards, UDMA7, 5-6fps FX, 8DX, Add on bigger battery for better performance, large buffer 40 shot RAW, complete metal sealed body, USB3. $2400ish I'd buy tomorrow.
I don't want 24 or 36MB's. Built in WIFI would be nice but not necessary.

    framer
    --D4 / D800 auto-focus.
    --16-24 MP
--1/8000th of second shutter speed with 1/250th flash and HSS to 1/4000th
--Keep the new Battery pack shape and Compatibility with D300.
--Keep ergonomics / grip / buttons
    --Add U1 / U2 /U3..
--Same body an button lay-out as current D700. The ergonomics on the D700 body make it a total pleasure to shoot all day.
-- Focal points spread wide across frame
    --Price $2,400 to $3,000
    --Native and usuable ISO to 100 to 12,800 ISO ( no Hi 1, 2, 3, and a L1/2 to 25 / 50 ISO
