I have found that using other microfiber cloths to clean my lenses, they have a tendency to leave behind these funny looking lints or what ever they are on the front elements. Very noticeable if you looking from a 45 degrees angle. However, the Lecia cloth does not.

T-shirt...really? I have never tried that before. :^o

I just got my Leica Lens cleaning cloth and Nikon Fog Eliminator in the mail this week. Used the Leica cloth yesterday and it did a great job cleaning my wives fingerprint off her 18-105mm lens.

I have had the same experience that Golf has had..."some microfiber cloths leave a funny looking lint or the front element" which requires an air brush or blowing on the front element to remove or more microfiber cleaning.

And the Leica lens cleaning cloth has a very nice soft feel to it versus some of the other brands. I just demoted my other microfiber cloth to cleaning DSLR and lens bodies. Good recommendation Golf.

@Msmoto needs to step up to the Leica Lens cleaning cloth. LoL

Leica Lens Cleaning Cloth, about the same cost as UltraLeather……

Actually, I rarely clean the front element other than blow off stuff with my Giottos Rocket….Or, if I have put my finger on the front element. In two years, I have cleaned my 400mm f/2.8 once…. just very careful about not getting junk on it.

And, after a day in the rain recently in Williamsburg, Virginia, I think I wiped the filter on the front of the 24mm f/1.4 Nikkor with my shirt, mainly to get the water drops off…..

Unless there is a large amount of dirt, or a smear, or water droplets, I do not think the image degradation is significant.

All the above are comments from someone who is NOT shooting professionally. If i were doing work professionally, i would have my gear cleaned like most pros, clean and inspect after every shoot. When I was doing this stuff for money, there was not really a second chance. The logistics were so complex for many shots, a failure was simply not an option and thus having all the equipment functioning perfectly was the rule, no exception. And, this meant cleaning and inspection. Not by an assistant either, but by mean ol' me! I think perfection and control were my character defects…. :))

I can tell you this, when you are shooting at the beach, as I have been doing over the past few shootouts, their is a some form of ocean spray that finds itself on the front element of the each lens I use. It is easily cleaned and addressed after each shoot with the cloth.

I understand Msmoto's point of view, but at the beach, in the snow, shooting in Yellowstone I want to get that stuff off the lens immediately. My go to cleaner has been microfiber over shirts for years and a good cleaning at the end of each day using a Glottos Rocket plus PEC PAD and ROR if its really dirty.

Yes, agree, when there is stuff like snow or "snirt" , dust, salt spray, or other significant contaminant on the front surface, I do remove this immediately. One reason I use a LensCoat Rain Coat is to protect the lens from salt spray and blowing sand. This means I clean only the front glass on the lens. And, on this lens, I do not use my T-shirt. In fact, I blow with my Giottos, then very carefully use a lens cleaning pad, gently swabbing so as to remove any crude, but not firm enough to potentially scratch the front surface. On this lens the front is actually a clear protector, can be replaced by Nikon, so if damaged, no serious damage to the lens.

The final front element is, as Msmoto stated, a protector; moreover, this element is on all the "big guns." My procedure in cleaning it is to pour some clean water on it...this insures that all the hard substance that has attached itself to the element washes off. It is then that I clean and dry it with a standard microfiber cloth. Final step is with the Leica cloth.

Ooh and I too have purchased the LensCoat...highly recommend.

@Msmoto, that makes a lot of sense using the LensCoat in those conditions. Your photograph says it all. BTW, excellent form for hand holding that big lens. You got that left elbow right were it should be for support.

I have used a rain coat when it's raining/drizzling/snowing but never thought about using one for sandy conditions and salt air. Great tip.

I lived in Florida when I started photography and your correct, you got to be careful you don't scratch that lens or filter with any small sand. I have used those same steps to remove gunk from the front lens filter. Thanks for taking the time to share with everyone.

Am I the only one who uses a Giottos Goat hair lens brush? It's good for removing lint or larger dust balls.

Have used the Large Giottos Rocket Air bulb blower and love it. I am going to have to check out the one Golf posted in his list.

I finally used the Leica Lens Cleaning cloth and yes it works and love the soft feel. While I was putting away the Leica cloth I looked at my collection of microfiber cloths I noticed that there are recommended differences in cleaning them but the exchange we had above really covered how to do that.

The soft microfiber cleaning clothes do work well for cleaning bodies of cameras and lens. When my order arrived from Amazon the wife took half of them for window & counter top cleaning. LoL

I don't want to start a controversy (like DX vs FX) but I picked one of these up in Hong Kong last week, and it's the best cleaning cloth I've ever used. I also picked up the matching spray cleaner. All I have to say is "Wow".

I picked up a ZEISS 12X16 microfiber cloth today at Walmart in there optical department ($3 and something). Is there a club to join? B-)

@Ironheart: Thanks for the link. However, B&H will not ship that item...you have to pick it up in the store. So I ordered this via Amazon. I just might to what Parke1953 did and stop by my local Walmart and get it. If not then I will just wait till I have need for more goodies from B&H so I can save the shipping. Moreover, I will most likely get 2 of these :P

Bringing back this forum for an update on the HoodLoupe 3.0. I had mine for about 8 years and use it on bright days to provide a glare free viewing of the LCD screen. It eliminates the washed out screen you get from the bright sun.

Anyway I lost it 2 weeks ago and reordered the HoodLoupe 3.0 HLPP3M for my D7100 & D750 from B&H. Note, you should buy this model for 3" and 3.2" screens Nikon LCD screens. The 3.2 model is for Canon not Nikon.

When I opened the package today I noticed several improvements to the HoodLoupe.
    1. The German glass optics chamber is mounted differently. The +/- 3 diopter adjustment works well with or without glasses too
    2. The Lanyard is now detachable - nice addition
    3. The carry case is bigger and now I don't have to screw in the diopter adjustment to get it into the case.
    4. The carry case no longer has a slide over hooked belt clip. It's been replaced by a loop.
    5. They have added a screw socket to the bottom of the hood to facilitate mounting to their base plate or a Hoodcrane.

I have confirmed that it does allow you to see the entire 3.2" LCD screen on the Nikon D7100; from top to bottom and left to right.

It's nice to see Inspired Imaging Tools/Hoodman Corp. continue to improve their product. Highly recommended. I got mine at B&H:
