Any 24-70 f2.8 update on the horizon?

Hi everyone,

I may be switching from DX to FX soon and I was thinking of buying the 24-70 f2.8 as a trans-standard zoom lens but the buying guide is telling us to wait for an update, how can we know when it'll be refreshed? Are there any rumors or something? :)

Thanks all!

On the Buying Guide, It is suggested to wait on the AF-S 24-70 f/2.8G. Why, I am not certain. But, as I have an excellent 24-120mm F4 VR, I do not really need the 24-70.

    I am waitng, but this is kinda like when I "waited" for a D4....2 1/2 years....LOL :-))

Hi to both of you Spaynpray and Msmoto :) Thanks for your answers. Actually, I was wondering why we were adviced to wait as the reviews on this lens are quite good already... The thing is, I can wait for an update (if really necessary...) but I think I'm not going to try to wait for an upgraded lens like I've been waiting for quite some time for a D400 ;)

I feel the AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED has been "succeeded" ( I going to avoid the words replaced and updated) by the AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR
If you need something wider than f4. and sharper. I would look a rage of primes

The current 24-70 was introduced in 2007. And, its reputation is super. But, just on the basis of age, maybe this is why the wait is suggested. And, as to the D400, I purchased a used D800E, could not be happier except the "D400" would have more FPS possibly.

Maybe a redesigned 24-70 would have internal zoom, so the length would not change, and the fluorite elements or coatings might be used...Who knows?

I was wondering actually if the 24-120 f4 was worth the try or not...I've got the 70-200 f4 and I'm doing photos for a dance school with it and it's awesome! I'm getting really nice shots with my D7000 and recently with a borrowed D600. But I'm wondering if I'm going to need the f2.8 of the 24-70 or if the f4 of the 24-120 will just be as good as it's on my 70-200.
Maybe I should look a bit more in depth in the reviews of the 24-120, especially with it's autofocus speed :)

If I had not got the 24-120 f4 with my D750, I would have looked at the Tamron 24-70 as it has image stabilization and tests well against the Nikon in all but build quality. If you play football with your lenses, this might be a problem for you. Otherwise...

there are lots of discussions on 24 -70 vs 24 -120

in summary _ they are both very good lenses

one is f2.8 the other f4
one has vr the other does not
one goes to 70mm the other 120mm

    There are no hidden gotchas

Having been there in October and buying in November, it requires some thought. The Tamron representative pushed his lens and when I bought the Nikon he smiled and said you will be happy. If you are on a tight budget, get the Nikon. If you have the $$$, buy the Nikon.

If you really want the Nikon and $$$ is tight, look for a refurbished 24-70 F2.8. Good luck.

I bet there will be two released a 24-70mm 2.8 and a 24-70mm F4 VR just like Canon did last year. Both will be shockingly spectacular and might be announced at Photokina 2015 in September in Germany, but then again probably not. If not, perhaps PMA in January might be another time for such a major announcement. Basically, my point is we are probably getting close now for a refresh but nobody knows for sure. The 35-70mm 2.8 was in production from 1987-2007, but tailed off considerably after 1999. The 28-70 2.8 pro era workhorse began in 1999 and ended in 2007. The current wonderful 24-70 era has been with us from 2007 til now. So it has been the same 9 year period. I think by 2016 we will see a new model (s) being shipped out. Even when it gets announced the 24-70 would be delayed and supply would not be able to keep up with demand I am 100% sure. Regular people would probably get their hands on one by Christmas or US Thanksgiving 2016...

That being said, both current pro mid-range zooms are excellent and built to last. You would be a very satisfied customer with either although they weigh a ton especially the 1999 tank.

IF Nikon do go mirrorless, allowing the rear element to be closer to the sensor . I think we can expect some new, wide, super and mid range zooms

Not to mention some usage of that brilliant new Phase Fresnel (PF) potentially in new lenses. If the new 24-70 or other lenses have this in the months ahead it will be extremely exciting! :)

If only we had a roadmap :)
But for what I've been reading (thanks for your answers!), either I'm going 24-70 or 24-120 I can't go wrong :D
I'm still trying to make up my mind between fast focus (24-70) and reach (24-120) ;)

I have the 24 -120 on a D800 I have never had any focusing issues apart from dimly lit dance floors

I'll be working on dimly lit dance floors too, but I was just speaking of the focus speed as it seems it's a little faster on the 24-70 (https://photographylife.com/reviews/nikon-24-120mm-f4g-vr/2) :)

For a dimly lit dance floor the 24-70 f 2.8 might well be better
but an f1.8 or f1.4 prime should be even faster

Since getting my 24-120 / f4 VR, I have not mounted the 24-70 / 2.8, even though it is a marginally sharper lens at f4.

The difference is very small and not worth sacrificing the range or weight advantage of the 24-120.

    IMHO .... H

I believe the reason it says to wait is because there was news about 4 months ago that a 24-70 f/2.8 PF VR lens was patented by Nikon and that the admin suggested it could be released by the end of 2015 as an update to the existing 24-70mm f/2.8.

I have the old 35-70 F2.8, its really a great old lense. On DX it becomes almost the perfect portrait zoom. When I got my D610, it of course changed into a standard zoom it was made to be. I still use my DX cameras and my FX camera with it. It so good for longest time I couldn't find an excuse to upgrade it. Its a great testimony for getting Nikon lenses. Having said that I have looked into all the options mentioned here as well as the Sigma 24-105 F4.

    I went with the Tamron 24-70 F2.8.

All the lenses suggested here are great. It is a very contested focal range and the main contenders are all very good.
The best overall IQ I think would be
    1) the Canon 24-70 - but thats not an option for us !
    2) the Nikon 24-70
    3) then a bunch of equal thirds with tamron probably leading the bunch by a nose.
    Tamron 24-70 F2.8 VC, Sigma 24-105 OS, Canon 24-104 F4 IS, Nikon 24-120 F4 VR, Nikon 28-70 F2.8

The reasons I chose the Tamron are for small reasons particularly relevant to me. It may not be relevant to others and I am hesitant to state them because its so insignificant. Because it has some disadvantages as well that was not significant to me but may be to you. If you are considering the tamron and would like to know the nitty gritty details let me know and I will list them in all their gory details :-)

There is a rumor that Sigma will release a 24-70mm in their Art series, perhaps this year. That could be an interesting option. There were some rumors that it would be f/2, but it might be an f/2.8.

I have the 24-120mm f/4 Nikon, so I am fine waiting to see where this goes.

The 24-70mm Tokina 2.8 was released today without VR and it's even heavier than the Nikkor. Its $300 less than the used Nikkor also... [-(
