I have found the 70-200mm VRII with the TC-20EIII works extremely well for me. A 140-400mm f/5.6 zoom. I might be waiting for a 200-500mm f/4 from Nikon....??? The price may be the difficulty here, but it would be able to easily handle the TC14EIII, giving 280-700mm f/5.6....like WOW!

I have the 70-200 2.8 and the 2X converter. The new version of both. I am happy with what I get both with and without the converter.

Is the 80-400 better. I have no Idea as I have never used one.
I have tried the 70-200 f/2.8 with the TC 1.7 and found the results very soft. In my opinion the 80-400 AF/S is MUCH better.

    Cheers,
    Erik.

Interesting One_oh_Four. I have used the latest TC1.7 on the older 70-200 F2.8 and the results have been excellent. I have had no issues with sharpness at 2.8 or 4 or 5.6. Most of the time I am shooting between F7 to F11.

With zoom lenses and teleconverters, there is almost always the need for a focus fine adjustment to get to tack sharp.

I have heard that that combination was designed together. ie they were designed to work as a unit.

Hm, that would mean something in the TC is off.. The 70-200 is sharp as a katana, so I'd guess something is decentered or so in the TC. I'm going to have it checked...
