It does have the red assist lamp but as dark as it was the focus would hunt. It did find focus but wasn't always at the best moment. So, I used the penlight to catch him looking at the camera. To note, the focus assist lamp did work as long as I was within 10-15 feet from the object. I was in a wooded area so there was no ambient light at all. I experimented on foliage and trees and was impressed since I could barely see the point I was shooting. It just wasn't fast. I have noticed the D500 is a bit slower focusing than the D5 in similar light conditions.

@autofocus Thanks for the info! I've played with the AF assist in minimal light, but not yet with my D500. I'll have to stalk some prey tonight and remember to bring a penlight
