I have had an 18mm f3.5 AIS I bought new in 1985. Handled correctly, it can be wonderful. It is quite sharp in the center, the corners not so much. Better to stop down if you can. Stopping down also helps the vignetting.
14mm Samyang, 14-24 legend, 20mm AIS for starbursts (love the straight aperture blades), and beauty Zeiss glass 18 and 21mm. Can't afford the 15mm yet (probably never). For Leica M, the Voigtlander 15 and 12. The 18mm Zeiss is steller too. Yes, I do love me a good wide angle
jimmyboy that 16-35 could be next on the update list for Nikon as it is the same age as the 70-200 VR II I believe. Sounds like you don't need the refresh though!~

I am with jimmyboy, i really like my 16-35 f/4. It worked really well on some product shots I did, my client said they looked 3d. I got similar results on the 10-24mm when I was shooting DX.

All that said, I am tempted by the new Sigma 12-24. . .

Now, as to my second favorite..maybe the 24mm either f/1.4 or the PC f/3.5. Lots of fun can be had with tilt and shift.
