Handy little widget for Df

Much as I like using prime lenses on the DF I tend (somewhat unexpectedly) to use a big zoom. Tried the 70-200 f4G. Despite reading good reviews that just did not do the business for me - mediocre sharpness in comparison with my primes. Sent it back to Nikon and they replaced the VR unit but overall results still not brill. So got a late model 80 -200 f2.8 AFD. What a fantastic lens - absolutely love it! Used this so much that the finger rest front cover on the Df was coming away -I usually wrap the strap around back of my hand and dangle the camera and lens with fingers on the fairly small front grip. Came across a little Nikon widget -the DF- GR1 accessory on ebay - which is a plate and front grip that fits on the camera base. Simple, sturdy but pricey like all Nikon widgets - hence got one on ebay. Works very well to improve grip on the Df , particularly when used with a big heavy beast like the 80 -200 f 2.8.

I am stunned by your findings of the 70-200 f4, mine is superbly sharp with glue-like VR. My Canon shooting mate gets all slitty eyed when he sees images from it LOL!

my Df and 70-200f4 are a show stopper maybe you got a bad lens?

Also I have a third party grip for the Df it helps for portraits but for events I don't use the grips

Strange, on the D600 my 70-200mm f/4 is on par with my 70-200mm f/2.8. Just the top.

Yes I was disappointed with my 70-200f4G after initially loving the light weight and super quick focusing, hence the return for Nikon to check that was the best my particular one could do. I found that even after they replaced the VR unit the advantages were still not enough to endear me to it. I know that one of the big camera mags here only rated their test one as mediocre optically so perhaps mine was from the same production run. Anyway, the Df spends most of it's time now hanging around with the old pro 80 -200 f 2.8, perhaps an unusual pairing - odd couples rule?

My Df is now greatly enjoying being paired with a new Nikon 200-500 VR zoom. What a gobsmackingly fabulous lens that is - I am deeply impressed in all respects. Yes it is a bit of a beast size-wise and I doubt if it would be terribly comfortable to hang it on a Df body without the grip adapter but the extra bit of grip via the GR1thingy makes the ergonomics fine for me.
