I use a Nikon 7000 with a Sigma 50-500 lens. This works very well in daylight but practically useless at night under the lights. From what I've read, I should consider the Nikon 300mm f2.8. Honestly, the $5000+ for the new VR version is just outside my range. Any thoughts on the older non VR model or the 70-300 2.8 zoom?
thanks in advance!

The 70-300 might be an option on DX. But I would try to go at least for 500mm (FX equivalent) for soccer. That means you still need a TC to go with it and you will loose a couple of f-stops.
I do not know how the Tamron 200-500 performs in low light. Maybe somebody else has experience with it.
