Soccer under the lights.....which lens?

I use a Nikon 7000 with a Sigma 50-500 lens. This works very well in daylight but practically useless at night under the lights. From what I've read, I should consider the Nikon 300mm f2.8. Honestly, the $5000+ for the new VR version is just outside my range. Any thoughts on the older non VR model or the 70-300 2.8 zoom?

    Bill, I agree on your statement about the Sigma. Forget it in low light. See the photo below:
    D4, Sigma 50-500 at 400mm, Iso 12600, f5,6, 1/1000sec

    The 70-300 might be an option on DX. But I would try to go at least for 500mm (FX equivalent) for soccer. That means you still need a TC to go with it and you will loose a couple of f-stops.

    I do not know how the Tamron 200-500 performs in low light. Maybe somebody else has experience with it.
