I agree with what you say. The photo was completely candid, so I could not do anything about the background. I also agree that it would have been better at 2.8 than 4.0. However, I only shoot at 2.8 when I have a single subject or have the ability to line everyone up in the plane of focus, which is hard with a candid shot.
Note the following image:
So this was not candid. They posed that way, but the background sucked, so I maneuverer them to a better background. Alas, I shot at 2.8 instead of 4.0 and he is a bit soft. Thus my general rule above.
If you check out the bottom rear view mirror you might spot yours truly behind the lens (hanging on for dear life to the ladder up to the cab - only room for one in there!!!!).
Father and Son celebrating a triple. Our grand son hit the ball 190 feet driving in 2 runs. The distant to the fence was 200 ft. Dad is the head coach and always coaches 3rd.

Photobug....thanks for the nice comment...it was very noisy with the vines being rattled so vigorously by the machine but well worth the effort!! By the way, I meant to say great pic of the baseball release by your grandson...akin to me trying to get those impact shots on the golf course...not easy and many find the bin!!!!!
Cheers 'Wilf' but that's my beer okay!!!!
GPDen - Your welcome. Yup, your right, it's not easy getting that ball close to the hand after release. Also like the color of your PRT, especially the white on the head.
