Great big boy shot @HipShot! If it was coming further east I'd figure a way to see it. Or if I found out about it earlier. I never thought there would be a 40## operational again. And who knows if or when it will run next year given budget cuts etc.

One of my most mind bending revelations at Udvar-Hazy was that the shuttle's upper skin is quilted fabric.

My wife is a big quilter. When I showed her this she was pretty impressed. She put the picture in her club newsletter and her quilting buddies were like, 'meh." Go figure.

Interesting observation Capt - I did not notice that.

What struck me was just how chunky and brutal it looks in person. I expected something a little sexier based on the toys and models I had as a kid.

Also the heat tiles on the underside make it look like its built from giant Legos. And they really are all individually numbered.

@mhedges - I know, I took a similar shot on my trip back in 2016. The tiles make an interesting mosaic. In a military-industrial-complex sort of way.

@Photobug - Getting in that thing requires a special kind of person. I am not one of them.

That aircraft was/is meticulously restored and maintained.
