    Part 3 of 3
Darn it I forgot to comment on the tilt screen. I played with it and it is useful and yes it appeared to be robust in construction.

Great comments. I am excited...I placed my order about 2 hours after Best Buy had the option for pre-order. I am hoping to some degree that most people went to BH and Adorama. Wishful thinking. I can't wait for the change to FX from DX.

    Con’s
    1. The AF spots are closer together than my D7100.
Hate to break it to you, but all FX cameras are like that. The AF points cover exactly the same area as they do in an the D7100, so that the focus points are all available for DX mode use. That and it has to do with the physical size of the sub-mirror for the AF system.

@PB_PM - That makes logical sense. Never thought about why.

I took 7 photos in JPEG and then switched to RAW. Here are four of the JPEG pictures. After I downloaded the pictures I discovered I took the first 40+ pictures on this new camera. They unboxed it and put it on the shelf without playing with it. Strange.

All pictures were AUTO ISO in Aperture Priority mode at 6.3 with the Nikon 28-300mm F/3.5-5.6 EDVR AFS lens. Check out the computer screen detail:
    DSC_0001
    |Above picture ISO 7200|1/320 F6.3 at 302mm|

    DSC_0002
    This picture ISO 4000 1/80 F6.3 at 69mm

    DSC_0005
    Above at ISO 2200 1/125 at 6.3 116.5mm

    DSC_0007
    Above at ISO 1400 1/100 at 6.3 100.8mm

I need to go through the RAW pictures and select a few to upload.

@Photobug: I have complained bitterly about this problem in a couple of different threads. It makes composing some shots extremely difficult at f1.4.
Yes, this is something that has bugged me since switching to FX. That and the fact that Nikon in their great wisdom decided to cram all the cross type sensors right in the middle. :-(

    Sample images done by Imaging-Resource.com

Try out their Comparator and you can see how it stacks up against other cameras ISO wise. Checked it out myself against the D610 and it's definitely cleaner

Really looking forward to seeing more tests on the D750. I was going to pull the trigger on a D610 until the rumors began swirling on the D750. I've been looking to upgrade from my D7000 as I spend a good amount of time photographing my son's hockey team and the D7000 just isn't up to the job of producing clean images dealing with the poor lighting in many hockey rinks even with a 70-200 2.8 VRII mounted on it......not to mention how much the AF struggles as well. The D750 certainly seems on paper at least and from the Hi-ISO sample images I've seen to be a camera that will fill my needs really well without killing my wallet.

Really? The same size? My D7100's focus points are all there in 1.2 crop so surely the D750's are spread wider if they only go down to 1.5 crop?
    Always learning.

This is what I was saying, the spread of the focus points on the D7100 is wider than the D750. Hopefully the D750 is more spread out than the D600/610. Thanks KnockKnock for the drawings.

You have to understand that the FX viewfinder is much larger to start with, and so you have to keep the scale in mind. It is very likely that the D7100 points cover a larger area than the D600/D610. On the other hand on the D800/D4 etc the 51 point system covers the same area that it does on the D7100, it just looks smaller because the viewfinder is 1.5x bigger.

Having used both the D300 (51 point 100% VF) and the D700/D800 I can tell you right now it does not give you the same ability to frame, it just does not. The viewfinder is much bigger, but the coverage of focus points is the same area on the DX and FX bodies, which means that on the FX bodies less of the framing area has focus point coverage.

@PB_PM - Finally I got it. Thanks for the expanded explanation. I totally lost track of the ratio of the DX to FX viewfinder.

The outdoor pictures taken with the D750 were all in RAW. I kick myself for not switching back to JPEG so I could share those pictures. No one has released the upgrade for the D750 RAW images so they will sit on my HD until that time. I assume everyone knew that but I just wanted to state the obvious.

I looked again at the JPEG images that I posted above. IMHO the images are excellent at those high ISO values. Only one or two have commented on the images. Any other thoughts.

So I realize it's early and with no RAW converters out there it may be impossible to know, but is the verdict on this D750 that it's a D4s/Df ISO performer or a D800/D610 performer? There seems to be about a stop or so gap there and, for me, that would be a deal breaker one way or another. No, I don't trust Matt Granger :)

The Camera Store video also seems to think the D750 has about a 2/3rd stop improvement at high ISO over the D610 and it usable at 6400 ISO. Looking forward to the DxOMark high ISO number to see how it compares to their numbers for the other recent Nikon bodies. Doubt it will equal the D4s/Df numbers.

I too have my doubts, otherwise I'm certain Nikon would have really beat that to death on release. The most credible and trusted source I beleive to deliver a good combination of both objective and subjective performance is gonna be Nasim at Photography Life. DXO mark is fine but there seem to be inconsistencies there and it's so strictly technical I don't think it's quite as helpful.
  • PhotobugPhotobug Posts: 5,751Member
My hunch is that it's going to be D810/D610 performers. Hopefully the DxO mark results will be posted in the next 10 days. @JonMcGuffin - be sure to let us know when the Nasim at Photography Life evaluation is posted,

I was at Roberts Camera this afternoon in Indianapolis. They got their D750's on Wednesday and put them out for customers on Friday. So here is my second impression of the new D750.

Started with the Nikon 35 1.8 G lens and then switched to the Nikon 24-70 and then Tamron 42-70 lens. Looked thru the menus, shot pictures in JPEG large, and then pushed the ISO to 7000. The camera feel is really comfortable and when I switched to the Nikon 24-70mm the balance was excellent. Live view was fine and the AF system appeared to lock into any moving human I tried. When I gave it back to him it had 451 shots, so I took another 50 on this body. I really like this camera and had no negative take away.

I really did a lot of focusing with subjects close to the edge of the picture, locking the AF/AE and recomposing and even though their is more air from the outside AF point to the edge of the screen than a D7100 it's okay - I don't like it but understand the principles of why it is what it is. Since the FF view is wider than the DX viewfinder there has to be this extra space. For the type of photography I do I can live with it. I totally understand why @PitchBlack doesn't like it with the glamor work he does. If I was making my income from photography I would be more vocal about this issue.

I have NAS really bad right now. After using the D750 twice and now getting to use it with the 24-70mm lens I can see this in my future as my move to FX. The DX superior to FX forum was really good and solidified in my mind my next move.

Oh, since I was there I also tried the D80-400mm lens. Wow is that nice. So many people have comments about how great this lens is for IQ I had to check it out. I tried this on a D7100 and what a great reach you get with these two. One thing for sure, the FX body & 24-70mm have to come before the 80-400mm.

Finally, if your looking for a refurbished Nikon D810, Roberts Camera has a few in stock at $2800. It's not posted on their web site, if your interested, call Mail-Order department at 1-800-726-5544 from Mon-Fri 9am-5:30pm, Sat 9am-4:30pm.

Enough rambling. Even if your not in the market for a FX body, you owe it to your self to check out the D750. Perhaps NAS will get you as well. :-)) =D>
