Order a D810 today or wait....

I have been intending to upgrade from dx (d7000) for sometime. Today I can. My only concern is reading about sonys new sensors, well they look promising! I have waited patiently, should I wait some more and see what comes or take the plunge and stick with the d810 for maybe four years or so? Not really looking to upgrade continuously. Is the Iq likely to jump significantly and soon?

If you wait and see if the D850 at 56MP comes out then you will be able to use all your DX lenses at 24MP on the new body giving you D7200 quality..I am waiting to upgrade my D800 for the same reason.
Having owned the D7000 in the past you will be amazed at the improved quality even a D7100 can give you

Unless you want to wait a year or two or may be tree
    Go for it
    you will not be disappointed
It is without question, one of, if not the, best camera in the world

I would go for the D810. You never know what is around the corner, but you can be sure that it is a terrific upgrade from your D7000.

Like sevencrossing says, and within its category, the D810 is probably the best camera in the world.

then you will be able to use all your DX lenses ....
    forget your dx lenses
FX and the D810 is not about compromise
it is not about "good enough"
it is about producing tack sharp, first class results
it is about knowing, if the results are not first class, it is not the fault of the camera
Make sure you try your new toy with some first class FX glass eg one of the new f1.8 Nikon ED primes

I totally agree with Sevencrossing, prime lenses shine with D810.

    Go for it.
I don't think the so-called D850 is imminent, and it has not even been mentioned as a proper NR rumor. Only as a "rejected rumor" .... which doesn't stop it from being mentioned on the forum. The D810 is too new to be replaced.
Obviously, the D810 will get a successor, eventually (mid-2016 or something??).
Nikon could release other models, of course, featuring new sensors. That'll continue forever........

Thanks. I have never really bought into Dx glass, I always bought fx for the purpose of upgrading so I'm in a good place there!

Think I need to get it ordered :-)

Anything digital you buy will be replaced by something 'better'. Think of the photo's you will get or miss in the interval.

    The D810 will not dissapoint.

I agree with everyone. Buy the 810 now if you have FX glass. If you didn't have FS glass, I would do that first.

Sevencrossings "list" is pretty succinct. I view things the same way and have ended up with the glass in my signature.

Sandisk or Lexar, forget everything else. Look for cards rated for at least 633x (95MB/S) or faster.

If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

If you like the 35mm focal range you'll love the Sigma Art. Great lens!

    Sandisk is my recommendation.
The art series are awesome. The 50mm Art is always in my bag when I leave the house.

One can always purchase a used or refurb D800/E at lower cost, then when the newest comes along, an upgrade will not result in loosing much on the used purchase as It will be close to what you paid for it.

Lexar 1066X CF tests the fastest in the D810 and is less expensive than the Sandisk equivalent. A two packs are available at B & H which are cheaper than individuals.

The fastest card for the SD slot is the Sandik 95 mbs UHS 1.

I shoot BIF so the speed of buffer clearing
    matters.

I use the Lexar 1066x CF cards in the 810 and they work well, so second H's recommendation.
The newer Lexar SDs are faster than the extreme pro's of San Disk. I posted about this in another thread.
To the OP, congrats on the 810 purchase. It will be nice upgrade from the 7000, but be prepared for a learning curve.

The new Lexar SD's are indeed faster, but are UHS II which the D810 does not support. In the UHS I D810 the Sandisk 95 mbs is currently fastest. In a Fuji X-T1, the new Lexar is indeed faster.

Another vote for the D810. My blog is loaded with testing showing that the D810 is the finest camera in the world.

No caveats needed in my view. When you take in all factors I see the D810 as the overall leader across the board. Some cameras may do 1 or 2 things better but taken as a whole the D810 is superior for more reasons more often. One might need 20 systems (cameras and lenses) from various OEMs to marginally and insignificantly outperform the D810.

You can get better resolution with MF, but except for the Pentax, they are restricted to the studio. But I still agree because the Pentax system is limited compared to the Nikon.

Yeah, that 0.5 fps is not great for action...

Yes a refresh or new model is probably at least another year away mmcdonald. The D810 just turned 1 year old this month and what a camera it has been :D
