Hi guys,

Currently the 24-70mm f/2.8E and 70-200mm f/2.8E lenses are on sale here in Australia till 31st with 20% off + $200/$300 cashback (costing around 1750USD and 1900USD respectively). At the moment I have a few f/1.8 primes (20, 24, 35, 50, 85) along with the 70-200 f/4 and I am consider to either:

- Sell 20mm + 70-200 f/4 and purchase 70-200mm f/2.8E or,
- Sell 20mm and purchase 24-70mm f/2.8E or,
- Sell 20mm + 70-200 f/4 and purchase both 24-70mm f/2.8E + 70-200mm f/2.8E (probably shouldn't!)

Which upgrade do you guys think would be most worthwhile in the long term? As an enthusiast, I mostly shoot landscape panorama (on a tripod) and travel photos while on the go. Previously I was considering to eventually add the 24-70mm f/2.8E for travel usage mostly however 1900USD (much less after trading in 20mm and the f4) seems a great deal for the 70-200mm f/2.8E so now I am not sure if I should upgrade the tele instead. Thoughts?

Also, when picking up either of these lenses, what are the things should I check in-store and at home to ensure that I have a good copy?

Thanks in advance!

Dont think you need an upgrade .. its just NAS .. it will pass .....

The 20 is a nice landscaper lense with good sunstars ! I would keep it !!
the 70-200 F4 is much smaller and lighter than the 2.8s for travel. and sharper too..

PS where in down under are you?
    PPS : What sale !!

Sydney :) Many authorized retailers seem to have a 100th anv sale at the moment (e.g. 20% at camerahouse and 16% at george's camera on all nikon products).

The two "upgrades" cannot replace that 20mm so why do you want to sell it?
I agree with @heartyfisher that your current kit looks really attractive, and that you don't need those two "upgrades". If you took sports pictures, then the 70-200E should be on the wishlist. If you hate changing lenses, then the 24-70E would help you, but it wouldn't exactly be an upgrade.
One alternative suggestion would be to get the 14-24 if that's on sale, too. That would EXTEND your capabilities. Then, selling the 20mm would start making more sense.

I'm going to go with a few others, keep what you have now it's more than good enough.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.
  • Dont know the outcome, but lately vr has become attractive even for sime landscapes. I could see buying both zooms for the vr. EveR consider the 24-120 f4 vr instead of these 2 zooms?

The IQ of the 24-120 is quite poor at 80mm IME.

Hi! I think that sell 20mm and purchase 24-70mm f/2.8E will be better. And what do you think?

20mm and 24-70 are two very different lenses - you would need a reason to move from one to the other. 24-70 is a very good allround lens.

70-200 F2.8 is a super good lens but a beast to carry compared to F4 version - do you need more light? I love my 70-200 F2.8 VR2

I had the D750 + 70-200 F2.8F EL around the next for 3 hours Saturday morning. No beast for me since I use a sling and the foot for carrying the gear or let it hang on the sling. Great lens.
