I still have the Nikon D600. If you already have many good lenses and when the price becomes around €1500.- as the Nikon Z6 body is now and your D750 or so is 6 years old, then this is a very good ugrade for the next 5 or more years. For first time FF users I should go for the Nikon Z6/Z7.

Video will become more important, but due to the last Z6 firmware upgrade it is behind the Z6. The next video firmware upgrade will cost. I want to see the Image Quality with this sensor and rent will it for a weekend, when it's available.

    - 802.11b/g/n + Bluetooth 4.1, very strange this is not the same as the Z6
Nikon did not listen to his customers as usual. No intensions at all to change or improve wireless connections, these protocals are so old. It should be:
802.11b/g/n/ac/ax (for WiFi 6) + Bluetooth 5.1, a good Snapbridge and WTU upgrade.
The Nikon Z6 has 802.11b/g/n/a/ac and Bluetooth 4.2 (this BT is also old, but it works)

    - No IBIS, for me the sign that DSLR is ending.
    - USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5 GBit/sec) same as Z6. should be Gen 2 (10Gbit/sec), but no problem.

Has this got a low pass filter? If not that would be a 20% improvement on the old model.

It is the same sensor as the Nikon Z6 with AA filter, but I can't see the difference in IQ as I could. I think it is'nt a AA filter as we know it in DSLR's.

This is a complete different 24.5MP BSI CMOS sensor with on-sensor phase detection, that is why AF is so accurate.

    @DaveyJ I agree the 16-80 is a great lens.

Pardon me if we've already discussed it, but how do you like what the 70-300 DX AF-P lens gives you? I really wanted to like that lens, but could never get really sharp images from mine, especially at 300. Would up getting rid of it and bought the FX version which I liked much better.

I have had far better results with the 70-300 AF-P DX VR lens. We actually bought two at once, I tried them both and a friend took the other. I have tried the NEW FX version, which is marginally better but to me considerably bigger. So I use now the 70-300 AF-P DX VR all the time when I want that range. I could not justify the greater cost of the new FX version and did not want the added cost. My Older FX version which also is bigger gets soft beyond about 210 mm.

I’m sure looking at the new Nikon 780 AND the 24-120 f4 Nikkor. I do NOT want an f2.8 as they are too big, too expensive, and I almost never shoot below f5.6 as I want depth of field. In fact add ExSpeed 6 and onboard flash to the D500 and THAT is what I want and NEED! The D500 caused more Canon wildlife and race photo pros to switch to Nikon than ANY other cameras. I know of.

Yep all indications are same sensor as Z6. So I would expect the same image quality.

@Ton14 what do you mean by paid firmware for video? Yes, you will have to pay to get the Prores Raw out, presumably due to licensing fees. But I think there will still be various other video related firmware updates for free.

Yes the FX one is noticeably bigger. Although to be honest the DX version was bigger than I wanted, expecially compared to the very compact 55-200, which I found was better optically. And yes the older FX 70-300's are not considered particularly good.

Just FYI on the 24-120 - opinions on that lens are decidedly mixed. I would not expect similar performance to the 16-80.

I mean what you mentioned, The new Prores Raw upgrade, but at the moment that is for a small amount of users, the rest goes normal as usual I think.

The AF system of the D5 is built in as well, that's a big advantaged.

No way, paying $2.3k to upgrade to D780 if you have a functional D750 is nuts. Even for someone new to Nikon FF and has to choose between D780/D750/Z6, D780 will be the last choice right now given the current price. Nikon sets the D780 price to harvest the ignorant people first. Once those people finish their buying, the price will go down soon. You can't really fault Nikon's business approach too much, but it does indicates clearly that it values short term money over anything else.

One interesting feature of the D780 is that the AF Fine Tune now allows you to save two different settings per lens - Wide and Tele - instead of just one:

It's looking like a great option for f-mount diehards that want some mirrorless functionality. The mirrorless side looks less and less appealing when you find out that it only works with the back screen. Also the price is just too much when comparing to Z6. Nikon is really creating an interesting battle!

I'd have to agree, if you have 1-2 models before the D780, you really don't need to upgrade. The D780 is the type of camera you'd buy right before Nikon discontinues all DSLR production. I'm planning to get a DX camera before then too.

No idea. But Z6 can do 12FPS mechanical shutter and I thought this should be able to do similar. But maybe the mirror complicates things.

I’ll save my money for the D500 upgrade or just get another of those. My daily cameras are two D7500s. The Z50 and two kit lens is a keeper. But the lack of screw in hoods and back lens caps is just plain cost cutting which will offend enthusiasts. But I will buy them. Heaven forbid but my next purchase seems destined to be yet another D500. If it didn’t have a ExSpeed 5 processor I would NOT buy it. Still I rate it as nearly the worlds best camera......by my farm use, motorcycle races use, and wildlife all of which need the DX multiplier effect to keep you out of the danger zone!

A few years ago driving in Yellowstone NP, I had the D7100 + 200-500 sitting in the back seat and the D750 + 70-200 in my wife's lap. We pulled around the curve in the road and there were Bison walking on the road with 4 cars on the road or pulled off on the side. Two cameras with the wrong lens. Can't win. Went scrambling for my 24-70mm lens. Got a few good shots but when they walked down the center of the road, 3 ft from my door, I again had the wrong lens on the D750, I needed a wide wide angle lens.

Another day there was a full adult Elk under a tree and I grabbed the D7100 +200-500 lens and got some excellent shots. Even with my great planning I got caught with the wrong lens and camera combination.

You have a good point about the DX sensor multiplier for what you shoot but sometimes wildlife just does not cooperate and the long lens or DX multiplier is too long of a reach.

Photobug is totally right here. That is why I leave a Nikon with the 16-80 lens on it. But obviously that is a DX lens. Now I also have the Z50 with the two kit lens and have had excellent results with both lens. I tend to leave it mostly with the 16-50 lens on it which is very good, and makes a remarkably small and nimble package. Next time I go to Yellowstone mid river I’ll have the Z50 with the 16-50 in place and switch to the small 50-250 if needed. My 50-250 is set up with a circular polarizer on it full time. The 16-50 I have a UV filter on full time. Both the stills and video on that camera are excellent. But for other Yellowstone usage I’d have all three set up. That works OK when your car is right there on the park loop. But a D7200 with either the 16-80 or a longer lens, and the D7500 set up what I thought I’d need fastest.

I do prefer the 200-500 f5.6 for wildlife but I do need access to a 70-300 type zoom too. It does though take awhile to mount a 50-250 kit lens to the Z50. Ultimately though I am certain I need either a D500 or the upgrade also set up for the fastest focus needs I anticipate. But anyone with a D750 or the new D780 would be wise to have that ready to go. I am certain now I could manage hikes at Yellowstone with three rigs with me, all set up for quick draw. The Z50 and two kit lens makes such a one if by land, three if by sea possible, but in the past out there I had the D7200 and D500 and the lens were the 16-80 and the 200-500. Often though I would had better results with a 70-300 or 70-200. Problem is the 70 200 2.8 I owned in the past and sold was it was too heavy to handle with the big 200-500 also on me. Without a Black Rapid Strap I could have not managed a DX Camera and the mounted 200-500 f5.6 well at all.

DaveyJ - great summary of equipment utilization for Yellowstone, applicable to other National Parks too.

The 70-200 2.8 and the 200-500 5.6 are a lot of weight to carry on hikes, even for short distances. For hiking, I leave the long lens in the car and take the 70-200 2.8 and a 1.6 Teleconverter in case I need the reach on the D750. I went with the "Boss Strap" instead of the "Black Rapid Strap", either one is an excellent strap. Love the body and lens on the hip. With the 70-200 2.8 the RSR replacement foot makes a great grip.

Trips to Yellowstone sure should be combined with Grand Teton, National Park! Next time I am driving my car out from New York’s Adirondack Mountains. Too much gear I want to have with me and then I’ll hopefully be able to find what I need quickly. Also the rental car fee is replaced. Usually I fly into Jackson Hole so Grand Tetons is right there. This next trip I am also going up to Glacier NP. Maybe even onto Lake Louise in Canada.
  • PhotobugPhotobug Posts: 5,751Member
Agree, 4 years ago we also flew into Jackson Hole and stayed at the Jackson Lake Lodge for 4 nights with the view of Jackson Lake..well worth the upgrade for the mountain view. We spent 4 days touring Grand Tetons NP, one of my favorite parks. All the comments about multiple camera usage apply here as you stumble upon Elk, Deer and the occasional Bear.

From there to Yellowstone, believe it was 3 days at Snow Lodge then outside the park for 3 more days. The pure scenic beautify and wildlife opportunities are terrific. Then back to Jackson for the night before departing Jackson Hole Airport early in the morning. This is two trip;s to GTNP and Yellowstone NP in 10 years with no children. The wife and I had lots of fun and enjoyed the trip.

I use a large camera back on rollers and my 200-500 5.6 and 70-200 2.8 were buried in my luggage to open up space in my International roller bag. This trip was all for photography and you have got to plan carefully.

Anyway back to the topic of this thread....I am headed to the local dealer on Monday to see the D780. If the store Manager is not there, its and easy visit, otherwise he will be after me to put down $200 to order a D780 and after me to bring my D750 in for a trade in cost.

I'm curious how well the AF will work in live view with AF-D lenses. Wondering if the mechanical slop inherent in that system causes any problems.

Not yet. Waiting on a phone call from the store when they arrive. I did see that Adorama and B&H now have them in stock.
