10 or 15mm FF compact prime? That would be really cool although I can't see it happening. I expect a Z mount 10-20 (or thereabouts) zoom lens to cover that range.

They likely would not be that compact and probably not f 1.8 or 2.0 like the other compact primes. And really cool might be a reason for Nikon to do it.

I've been reading some of Thom Hogan's discussion on DX Nikon Z cameras and I have to agree, Nikon is missing a whole bunch of cameras that slot above and below the Z6, Z7 and Z50. I am personally looking for a Z mount version of the D7500, which currently does not exist and as such I will not be making a purchase.

More bodies coming next year but most of us are hoping for new full frame bodies slotted above the Z6II and Z7II. I have not seen any anticipation of new Z DX bodies.

Yes, that's what I heard. If Nikon produces a successor to the D7500 (doubtful), I might just get that instead of a Z mount camera.

To me Z50 is pretty close to a D7500 successor, no matter what Thom says. I know it doesn't have all the buttons but it does have several features that were traditionally limited to the 7000 series bodies, starting with the dual control wheels.

It is a hell of a camera in a small package. That is why I would love to see (and buy) a full frame version to pair with the compact primes. That said, I think a Z 70 will be a Z 6ii with the Z 50 sensor. Think of the Z 50 as between a D5500 and D7500 and a Z 70 as between a D7500 and D500.

That's a good point. I might be interested in that - would go along well with a Z6 I think.

That's fair. I'm still going to wait a bit haha. Thom gave a pretty glowing review of the Z50.

From what I have read I am thinking "next please" . Not very impressed ,nothing to make me want it and a lot to say no to. (20 MP ,1 slot, f6.3,price) but its not aimed at me so good luck Nikon , Hope the focus works

I have a D3500, the latest in a line of low-suds DX-format Nikons I've been using for over 13 years, starting with a used D40. My D3500, bought new in November 2019, is outstanding; I love it to bits.

Why should I be in the least bit interested in the Z50, Nikon?
    • The DX-format Nikon Z50 boasts fewer megapixels than the D3500 (21MP vs. 24MP).

    • The Z50 weighs more (450g vs. 415g body only)

    • Its battery life is far shorter (I can get a month's use from a single charge on my D3500, taking it out with me every day on my walks).

    • It's more than twice the price of the D3500!!!
Now, if you want to move up to FX format, then yes, the larger Z6 and Z7 mirrorless Nikons do compare favourably in terms of weight with their DSLR rivals such as the D780 and D850. But the cost of moving to FX is huge; the cheapest Nikon FX body (the D750) costs two-and-half times as much as the D3500 with kit lens.

I think the difference in MP count is a non-issue. The reason to upgrade is ergonomics. My wife has a D5500 and I think the Z50 is a significant upgrade.

Plus the Z lenses, even the DX zooms, are significantly sharper.

Thus my lens philosophy, the best lens is the one that fits on your camera natively.

My MOST trusted field camera is the Z50 and two kit lens. I used the 16-50 and the 50-250 BOTH so much I was forced to get a second Z50 so I did not have to keep switching lens. BUT I did get the second "Z50" as the Z fc which I only own the silver 16-50 on the black Z fc. It took LONGER to get used to the Z fc than the Z50! But they are BOTH a GREAT investment.

The D7500 stays on my 200-500 F 5.6 and it is my MOST valuable wildlife and distance combo. I would rate the D7500 at 250mm on the 200-500 F5.6 lens as very possibly better than the Z50 at 250mm. BUT BOTH are really, really good! The Z50 and 50-250 is MUCH easier to use on video than the D7500 with the 200-500 F5.6

I completely agree with WestEndPhoto about best lens that fits on your camera natively. I sure HOPE Nikon comes out with the 200-600 Z zoom soon!!
