SB-920 - Is A new Nikon Flash coming?

edited April 2013 in Nikon Flashes
I have seen the SB-910s falling to $435 and even as low as $425 all over (all new, not refurbished.) That was the price of the Sb-900 was at when a new one (SB-910) was released.

Just curious if anyone has heard anything.
(Start the speculation)

$425? Man, I got robbed on my SB-700 at $319 last week then... :(( I hadn't noticed the SB-910 dropping that far in price. Time to return the 700 and pick up a 910 :D (in case you all haven't noticed, I have fallen victim to a severe case of NAS in the last 3 months and I fear it may not be treatable without a drastic intervention like bankruptcy :-/ )

What would they add to the 920 that the 910 doesn't have? More power? More logical menus? I'm a newb to the speedlight world so I'm not sure where the value would be found.

I hope if they are bringing one out, it is with the longer sb900 case... the sb910 square case isn't belt friendly at all.

... And no time to use them.

I'm kinda thinking they've realized the price was too high and that they'll sell more at a lower price point.

Realized price was too high? Not Nikon. Just as all of Nikon's stuff, prices drop 5-10% in the first year but then flashes have held at about 85-90% until they are going out of date. Oddly, I have seen a bunch of used SB-800s going for much less than usual on ebay, and many used SB-900s listed as well. There are fluctuations always with postings, but my auto search emails are filled almost every day with new listings. Many are coming from Florida and California which are two of the hot spots for photographers getting "testing" gear.

Locations: A bunch of mid-size stores in the US. Midwest photo was one of them. DigitalRev was another that had them that low lately. Ebay has some that are listed from actual stores (meaning a physical store front) located in the US. Saw a couple in Canada as well.

In Germany the recommended retail price is 509 € but Amazon sells it currently at 389 €. That is still more expensive than in the US but it is about 24% off.

If I saw correctly the recommended price in the US is US$ 549, so the 425 would also be about 22.5% off. Just to add some oil to the fire... :)

When OEM products start to go for 25% off across the board (anything) it does seem to indicate they are clearing inventory. I have heard from a few that told me that the store mark-up is generally 25-38% on most electronics when brand new (suggested msrp). At that price they are breaking even or making just a few bucks off of it.

Please let me know if you see (or hear) of any "deals" on the R1C1 system; it's "been around" for quite a while now, and I can't seem to find anyone giving even a dollar off ! It comes with two SB-R200 speed lights, and I would like to have three. If I could get a 25% price break, I could buy the third speed light right away. But knowing Nikon, a new SB-920 would probably only affect the prices of the 900 and 910.

I have never seen that thing ever go for less. It has been around for a very long time.

I did get a used SU-800 for $175 last week though. :) Most are going for $250.

Just checked Midwest, DigitalRev, Best Buy, Adorama, B&H, Ritz, Calumet, and Amazon.

None are selling new SB-910s below $545 at this time.

I just found a couple on the "google shopping" for $400 and other sites at $430s. DigitalRev had it for $469 when I looked.

Sure, from sites like "overstockdigital" with horrible reviews and other gray-market sellers.

But I don't think gray-market prices are indicative of a new model coming out.
  • TaoTeJaredTaoTeJared Posts: 1,306Member
Sory Ade - they are all good sites most with storefronts. Not from Brooklyn, not gray-market sellers, not refurbished. Just because you can't find them doesn't mean they don't exist. I guess my search skills are better than yours.

Yet you haven't posted a link to a single example of any reputable, Nikon authorized seller offering a new SB-910 w/ actual Nikon USA warranty (not grey market or some crap 3rd-party USA warranty) for, say, $435 (per your original post).

I have found several from about $436 and up. However, one had Canadian 2 year warranty, another had no instruction book yet was "In factory sealed packaging".

If one goes to the Buying Guide on NR http://nikonrumors.com/prices/ you will see "check eBay prices" and will find a lot of new SB-910 flash units for these prices on eBay.

Sure, if we're talking grey market, then the prices are of course lower, but as I mentioned above, that wouldn't be indicative of a new model flash being introduced.

Lots of sellers may offer "Canadian" warranty or "USA" warranty, but those aren't necessarily NIKON warranties. Many are actually "store" warranties which are not accepted anywhere else except from the original store.

SInce those sellers are not Nikon authorized dealers, who knows where they obtained their products from or what is the true condition of the products they're selling? Some have legitimate imported stock, but other sellers are not exactly ethical.

TTJ: would you mind posting a few links to what you've found?
  • safyresafyre Posts: 113Member
Just did a quick search and all of these stores selling it for around the $435 price point are the usual bait and switch companies. Don't trust reseller ratings, most of these companies have caught on to it and are creating fake accounts to spam good reviews. Yelp is a much, much better indicator of store reputation; I already checked them out and the reviews are pretty bad.

It is against NR policy to post links - and you know that. And you also know that Nikon banned Grey market flashes in the US a year ago.

I typed in the search again in google and I found 10 ACTUAL stores all selling them for under $460 on the first page. I have been, and stood inside 4 of them. NOT GREY MARKET, NOT BAIT AND SWITCH, NOT REFURBISHED - All Nikon USA warranties, brand new in the box, and the stores are Authorized dealers or large box stores. Follow MsMoto's link to ebay - you can find the stores selling them and search for them on google if they are not pulling up for you. Most of them are actual storefronts that use ebay to sell as well.

I'm not sure what you guys are doing, but each time I search it's like a pinata burst open.

Name those "authorized dealers or large box stores" then. No need to link if that's against rules.

Again: reputable stores carrying new SB-910 w/ actual Nikon USA warranty for $435 or under.

    At this exact moment:

    Midwest $549.95
    Best Buy $549.99
    Adorama $546.95
    B&H $546.95
    Ritz $549.95
    Calumet $549.95
    Amazon $546.95
    Walmart $546.95
    J&R $549.95
    Cameta $546.95
    Beach Camera $546.95
    The Shutterbug $549.95
DigitalRev $469 *Grey market, non-Nikon "local" warranty

I've run out of US stores I'd consider purchasing from...

EDIT: forgot to add, Nikon did NOT ban "grey market flashes in the US a year ago" as claimed.

TTJ, you do know that none of those 10 'stores' are on the authorized dealer list, right? A few of those 10 are ebay stores, which hardly count as actual stores since you can run those out of a garage and I have been to ebay 'stores' that were run out a garage before. 4 of those stores have 0, 1, or 2 ratings, which is an immediate red flag. The remainder have terrible reviews of bait & switch on Yelp. And just because you've been into one of those stores doesn't mean that they don't do shady business practices. I've been to physical camera stores that seem just fine when you go there in person, but do the normal shady stuff on the internet.

I have in the past lost a lot of money to various internet retailers. And, so my advice would be to check out any who are selling items on eBay, look especially for "XYZ Store reviews" via Google.

Also, if one cannot find a bricks and mortar store, this may also be a red flag. I would suggest if one has a question you contact the seller and ask them where they are located, physically and that you would like to visit them to make your purchase.

There are both legitimate and illegitimate sellers. .....caveat emptor.

As for google searches: please remember that depending on what Google knows about you (location, search history etc) you might get different results on the same search terms!
