Hi, I have just bought the D7100 from an Ebay Seller, I have now found out that the new D5300 is coming out.

Should I be worried about it?

Would love some advice.

Thanks

No...you did good. The D7100 is a better body than the D5300 in more ways than one. Start looking at some good glass for it. Not sure what you shoot but the more you tell us about your style the better we can help in that area.

    Cheers...

    absolutely not

the D7100 is one of the best DX cameras on the Market today

Don't even think about replacing it, until at least 3 years time

You bought a great camera and it is better than the new D5300. Go enjoy it and as Golf007sd said, go buy some lens for it. Enjoy.

If they had released the D400 you might have been, only thing I envy is the build in GPS, but I can live with the external :)

I believe the D7100 is the best camera I have ever owned. Since I have had more thousands in cameras than I care to think about. A lot of large and medium format gear that was spectacular once in awhile but so big and cumbersome (but I was as fast at setting one up as I have ever seen) I think the D7100 is about the best rig money can buy. I also admire the D800 and 800E. Built in GPS though I am not as sure about. Useful to you for sure. Maybe allows you to be tracked more than I like. Some places of silence and solitude would be better off the grid in my opinion as an environmental scientist. Yet GPS is so here to stay and a very useful feature that will help SELL the camera. Which after all is Nikon's bread and butter and our hope Nikons also build exactly what we individually want soon?

But I have no fear of what the D5300 has. The D7100 as Golf007sd so well pointed out is in many ways a BETTER camera. The only camera I think will make you wonder in the future is the D7200 which when it comes out your D7100 should be to you an old friend! Spend your energy (etc) on lens as Golf007sd pointed out. I have a 70-300VR on mine a lot, so obviously I like that lens. There are some lens I have proven to myself are less appropriate for the D7100 which still have some redeeming qualities (like the 55-300VR which still focuses close but at long end infinity is not as good or focus as fast as the 70-300VR. The 80-400VR new lens is apparently wonderful but bigger and EXPENSIVE. We'd like to hear how well you get along with this great D7100!

Something odd I notice regarding price points: on Amazon.com, the body-alone D7100 is $1146 versus $796 for the D5300 ($350 difference). But the kit with the 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX NIKKOR is $1446 for the D7100 and $1396 for the D5300 ($50 difference). I wonder why that would be...

    On another thread, Berger100 asked:
Since the new D5300 costs less than the D7100, I was wondering what others thought about the following details........
The new D5300 has no low pass filter just like the D7100 which means to me that it will take the same tack sharp photos. The 5300 has the new EXPEED 4 image processor and I don't know if that is significant or not. It appears that the 5300 has about the same low light capability as the 7100 as far as ISO goes. Are folks taking all this into consideration when choosing the 7100? Does the 7100 focus better? I need help understanding why the 7100 is the best pick. Is the built in focus motor a big deal or the 2 card slots? I could care less about gps or wifi. Most of the specs of these camera seem the same? I did read that it was easier to change some settings on the 7100 on the fly whereas you need the menu on the 5300. Please give your opinions.

@DaveyJ: You can turn GPS on and off as you please and as you see fit. Personally, I love having geotagged photos, but I agree that there are times when it's not appropriate. Also note that there are many many utilities that will strip out existing geotag information in a photo (Lightroom, among many others, allows you to do this).

@smadman: You are right about the GPS turn off or turn on as you see fit. We have it on the Nikon 1 AW 1 and are using it I think. If it is designed in to the camera removing it as an option would cost more if such an option were available.

Again I have used the D5300 and it is a very, very good camera. I just have decided to buy D7100s instead and in awhile I think there will be a new Nikon DSLR body intro. Maybe a D3300. That might not get some NR regulars attention. Owning quite a few higher end Nikons I did not think I would end up using a D3200 most of the time and the best buy in ANY recent digital camera I have seen for what we do as a family is the
Nikon 1 AW 1. That camera is amazing. For underwater use I would highly recommend it!

I see that the D7100 has a lot of great features, but my new D5300 with the Expeed 4 image processor produces pictures on par with my D800 or better. Incredible!!!

Happy that you're happy. But this kind of hyperbole, if you want us to take you seriously, needs to be backed up with proof. Show us your D5300's output compared to the same, same lens, same exposure of a D800.

Best, just be happy and sing to the world. The Internet can be brutal.... oh, wait. My bad, posting late at night after a glass of fortified wine ;-)

LOL guys.. there has been several "reports" of the nice output from the Expeed4 processor compared to the Expeed3. So there is probably some merit to what Dr_photo says even if its images that "just look better". there is definitely a different quality to the noise at higher ISO that when looking at images that are not 100% it would seem to hide the noise better by up to 1 or more stops !

You will have no problem with the D7100 ..I have 2 all the adjustments and memories U1 U2 you have make it far superior ..If you are into grey market stuff the 18-140 at half the nikon price is great value.
Put a 10mm on your D5300 and a 15mm on your D800 and then you will see the difference..

But does, as Dr Photo suggest a 24mp Dx Expeed 4 beats 36 mp FX Expeed 3 ?

If you never let the D7100 actually see a D5300 announcement or advert, it will most likely continue to function as it always has.

Maybe it does look better to a quick glance at 6400 iso due to the texture of the noise of the expeed4. The current reports we are getting for the D750 suggests people are perceiving up to a 2 stop advantage of the the D750 over the D600 which, extrapolated for the D5300 vs the D800 could seem to corelate with what Dr_photo is reporting.

Worrying about minor differences between cameras will not improve your art. Go out and take pictures!
this is the best advice in the whole thread.

Maybe for jpegs, but for RAW I seriously doubt it.
If a shooter is worried about IQ then he/she should upgrade to FX and be done with it. I would not recommend shooting anything on DX above the mid 3000 ISO range so these high ISO pics comparisons are silly. That said, for <$1K, the 7100 rules when it comes to price/performance. The AF is now on par with that of the old D800, and probably better since in 1.3 crop the sensors are spread corner to corner.

If we are only looking at the RAW output of cameras I think all Nikons current cameras will satisfy even demanding pro work. Sure there are differences in the technical image quality between cameras. But for 99 percent of all pictures taken you would not be able to tell the difference between cameras when you look at the final output.

More and more the real difference is in things like VF, AF, FPS, build.

The D7100 is top of the DX line - enjoy the hell out of it - show us the results on the PAD.

There you go again with the sense @PitchBlack. Next thing is you'll be saying that it is education and practice that makes pictures, not gadgets.
    Always learning.
  • PhotobugPhotobug Posts: 5,751Member
It's nice to see some common sense spoken here. It's amazing how many amateurs and advanced amateurs have not mastered their camera (education) and use their camera infrequently and then they complain they don't get "great" pictures. I offer to help and when you ask questions you get that "blank stare - what are you talking about".

Some time we get to critical with the gear and forget it's a tool. I also love it when someone, in this case @pitchBlack and @spraynpray brings us down to earth. Good for you.

This weeks motto - Get out their and take pictures!
