Hello all:
My 5 year old D2Xs had a bad fall and is damaged beyond repair.
At this time I only have $1000. Which is my best option,
A) used D2Xs body for $880
B) used D7100 body for $950
c) new D7000 body for $950

I appreciate your comments

I thought somewhere on Nikon Rumors they were saying D7000 with a zoom lens was going to be $800.

I own D7000 and am pretty happy it from a value and performance standpoint.
I know people who aren't happy with the layout vs. D300 though.

$950 is a lot for a D7000. Then again it depends on what country you are in.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

Hmm, I bought my D7000 new for $976 with tax in January from B and H. But then again, I also got a free Lowepro bag and 16 gig Sandisk memory card.

Now it should be a bit less than that.

    I don't think you'd want a D2x, it's fairly old stuff. Besides the frame rate, I think you'd be fine with a D7100.

Yup. From what I've seen the D7000 is about $795 before rebates these days. $$650-$599 for used.

Add to your list a used D600 body if you can get one for $1,000. Otherwise, I would recommend the D7100.

    I have the 17-85mm 1:2.8, the 80-400mm and a LensBaby.

Is refurbished better than "used" in good condition?

I would wait for a month and get a D700 when that price drops with the D610 (and D600s going for $1,200 now).

If it is Nikon Refurbished, yes, much better.

I would go with a new D7100 and sell your broken D2Xs on eBay. It's a great DX body. If you really want a FF body, I agree with TTj's ... D700.

If you have the DX lens (17-85/2.8?) then stick with the D7000, D7100. I suspect both will outperform the D2Xs. A refurb from Nikon is basically like a new body as I understand it. And, a refurbished D7100 from B & H is less than $1000 for example:

Others most likely have refurbs as well, Adorama, Amazon, to name a few.

If you already have good glass, you can sell the lens with the Best Buy D7000 deal and reduce your cost or keep it as a backup lens/1 lens solution for when you are traveling light.

I still recommend ebay. You can get a D7k on there for $650ish to $700 often

First decide if you want to stay DX or if you would like to go FX. You will find with a current generation FX body, such as the D600 or D610 you will not need to have an f2.8 lens anymore because you can now shoot "clean" at 3 or 4 times higher ISO than you are used to doing. You currently have one DX lens and one FX lens. An FX body will allow you to use your DX lens shooting in DX mode and your FX lens in FX mode. A DX body allows you to use both lenses in DX mode only. You are unable to use your FX lens in FX mode. You might want to consider adding a 50mm 1.8 G lens for a few hundred dollars to allow you to shoot in full FX mode at less than 80mm.

Second, if you decide to stay DX the best DX body you can buy now is the D7100 so aim for that. If you decide to go FX the least expensive FX bodies you can by now are the D700, D600 and the D610 so consider those. The D700 is one generation old and a new D610 is about double your budget so I would look for a good deal on a D600.

I know you started with limiting the expenditure to $1,000 but when you look at the options available to you you just may see the value in spending a few hundred dollars more.

[-X Tut-tut Donald, you shouldn't recommend a D600 with issuing a health warning about the spotty sensor.. :P

In my original recommendation of a D600 for $1,000 I also noted that you should plan on learning how to clean your sensor yourself. Sure some have a terrible dust issue but there are plenty that do not and even those that do seem to return to normal after 10,000 clicks. The dust issue is being overblown on the internet such that it makes people think 100% of the bodies are useless for their entire life expectancy. Not true. I do agree the dust issue should be pointed out to anyone buying a new or used D600.
  • Thanks a lot for all the comments.
    Very useful.
    Happy Thanksgiving to all.

A D600…….for $1000, now we are getting somewhere. I might even get one and just run off 15,000 clicks to get to a point where I do not have to clean the sensor very often.

But, a D7100 would be a lot less trouble. And, in the final analysis, I would think the difference between a D7100 and D600 could not be seen in most cases.

Totally agree with Msmoto...the D7100. Really don't think you will see a difference between the D7100 and D600.

Also agree with donaldejose...nicely written on DX or FF.

    @donaldejose:

Trust me, I would be all over a D600 if I could be sure it wouldn't soils itself/would stop soiling itself at 10K clicks/would be fixed by Nikon. It is a great camera barring the shutter problem. As it is, I don't need the hassle of retouching hundreds of shots after a macro or close-up shoot. I hear they can show at F8, so that would include landscape and some wedding shots in there.

    Anyway, this is off-topic (kinda).
    Always learning.
