One of the things that amazed me in Canada is the fact that NOBODY crossed the streets on a red light. Compare that to New York City...
Because if you do, it is a big fat ticket that awaits you the other side :>
Different provinces or even town have different rules.
In the west, if someone puts a foot on the pavement, even if he is not at a street corner, all cars must stop, otherwise, they get a fat ticket (and perhaps even loose points), on the other hand, the jay-walker will also get a ticket for not crossing at a pedestrian corner when he is authorized to do so.
In Montreal, stepping on the street in the same conditions may get you killed.
