At least this will protect the resale value for D600 owners.
It's way too late for that. Used D600's are going for what, $999-1100. That's already a net loss of almost $900. I've never seen a Nikon body loose value that quickly before. D90's are going for half the original sale value 5 years after the release. The D600 isn't even two years old yet!
Agreed a depreciation on this scale is unheard of with any Nikon body that I can remember. Prices dropped 60% within the first 6 months of its release, which is insane. Nikon took a heavy loss with this release and I suspect this will be the last fresh FX release for quite sometime with the exception of the D4s, which pros needed for the Olympics and upcoming World Cup events.
So, how many here will be sending in a D600 in response to the TSA? I boxed mine up and shipped it out today. If there's any interest, I can provide a play-by-play.
March 3: Printed packing slip and shipping label. Dropped off package at UPS agent.
I shipped mine out on 2/26/14. UPS has informed me that it will be delivered back to me tomorrow 3/10. So Nikon (NY) had it approximately 5 working days. Quicker than I thought but I did send it the same day as the post on the NR blog. (Thank you!)
Yes, I definitely had spots. I've had the D600 since 12/12. I never really got up to speed with it for lack of FF lenses. I have been using a D90 with a 12-24 for interior real estate photos on the web. That lens stays on the camera all the time so I never really had dust issues. I never checked the D600 (with only a thousand or so clicks) until the stuff hit the fan last year. I enlarged a bright blue sky at small fstop and there they were - small fuzzy gray spots - dozens-upper left as I remember. I was a little po'd about the whole situation and thought about maybe selling it for a D800 (overkill for me). I put off cleaning it for quite awhile. Despite all the internet doom and gloom from what I read I was confident I could take care of it myself but just hadn't gotten around to it yet. It was a coincidence that I had a cleaning kit on order at the same time I got the recall notice from NR and Nikon. I got a great deal on the camera/lens kit when I bought it so my loss might have been 400.00 or so at the auction site. Hopefully this service will settle the issue Otherwise, on to plan B.

March 3: Printed packing slip and shipping label. Dropped off package at UPS agent. March 6: UPS says package delivered. March 11: Received email from Nikon:
I'm happy to get it back so quickly. Mine was shipped within a couple of hours of seeing the notice on NR. I didn't get the official Nikon email notice until later that day. I would of expected at least a couple of weeks in the shop. Maybe that's the case now - they must be swamped. Now I'm on a mission to put some clics on the shutter and see how it works out.
My D600 was received at Nikon in Melville, NY last Wednesday, March 5, 2004. The status 6 days later, that is, today was updated to "Parts Hold." Obviously, this is a bit disconcerting:
Parts Hold D600 Order Number: xxxxxx (I deleted) Serial Number: xxxxxx (I deleted) UPS Tracking Number: Problem: SENSOR DUST No Charge/Good Will Repair Total cost of repair: $0.00*
For those of you who are tracking, I dropped mine off on February 27th. As of 6:30 EDT today it has been shipped back and is out for delivery. Status went from SHOP to BILLING to SHIPPED. Sat in SHOP status for about 10 days, BILLING for the last two days.
FWIW, I never had a dust issue (nothing that couldn't be cleaned with Giottos), but I took the chance on getting the new shutter. I didn't feel I had enough clicks for the problem to possibly manifest itself. We'll see....
I read the update on the China report (main Blog posting) about the spots and all the publicity Nikon is getting. Several members have posted messages in the D600 thread that somebody will and should lose their job over this issue and it was also mentioned by Peter, I believe in the Blog posting.
After 42 years in Industry, mostly pharmaceuticals, one or more individuals would have been written up for not disclosing the issue and if it would have dragged out, some one would be fired. Accountability is so important in any industry. In Japan, accountability and honor are so important. It's going to be interesting to watch this unfold.

My wife recently retired from a national shipping company. Her job was to analyze damage claims to determine whether the damage was the fault of the sender, or of the shipper. Part of the job involves inspecting the originator's packaging. When she saw how Nikon had packaged the camera for shipping, she said, "They did a really good job!"
I've got mine back a week ago. First 10 shots were to the bright skies. There is one spot on the upper left corner but nothing else. It showed up on the very first shot, but nothing else since then. So I guess they have just missed it when they have cleaned the sensor. Two things I noticed while I was testing the camera this past week: - The shutter noise is definitely different. It is a lighter sound. - But the thing that really surprised me is the b AWB. It is spot on every single time in every single light situation. I do not need to adjust it afterwards. This was not the case prior to the service. Oh, and another thing, they did some adjustments to the AF mechanism because I have now to re-tune all my lenses.

Anyway, I think that this new Nikon approach is going to bring back some value to D600.
