November 3rd - after a dance weekend in Elk Park, NC concluded I asked around and found somebody to bring me to the trailhead just north of Roan Mountain, for a 14-mile evening and night hike north to the Elk Park trailhead. Photo taken from Jane Bald, the second bald north of Roan Mountain, as the sun was setting behind Roan. Saturation cranked all the way up, and cropped to just the colourful bits.

Well figure after its all said and done I should post a few, this first picture is the view I had from my seat. The first track you see in front of the seats is the 1/4 mile, the track after was part of the race course, there is a car in the picture behind the fence and blurred due to a slow shutter speed (the car is heading from the left to the right in the picture). There are light poles everywhere, then if not a light pole, a big TV monitor, a track timer, fence or some other obstacle in my view. The main area where I got a few shots are at the hairpin corner at the far right of the screen. I caught them between the light post on the very far right and the track timing station that says "Pirelli" that the car that is blurred is fixing to go under. This was the only spot the cars were going slow enough that I could pan and have some action. Was not a good vantage point but everything else looked like cars parked on the track and the ISO was terrible. My overall keeper rate was pretty low but I think I got lucky once or twice (maybe).

The one thing I wish I really had was a good gimble head. Didn't need it for this picture but balancing something heavy on a ball head for more than 15 minutes gets old fast. If I was home that would not have been an issue since I have one. I did hand hold for a few shots but after about 10 minutes of that I was no longer steady and worthless for any shot.

Just in case you didn't see the thread on the D7100 Vs D700, I was at the Bahrain F1 race this past weekend.

guess what- more Freeport Maine shots. As you see, the weather was nice, but colder than Golf is used to it.

  • Like the way the light starts at the center behind the building and works out towards the outside edges, turning blue.
This was taken early in the morning and had to wait for just the right light.
