Then how do you explain that the opening price for an FX camera is declining.
Already did that, in two earlier posts. Volume of unit sales and production efficiency. Then add that to the fact that it is very likely that the D610 and Canon 6D are loss leaders to push higher margin full frame lens sales. Sony tried to do the same thing with their first entry level full frame body, in 2009, they just didn't have the consumer grade lenses to go with it.

Regardless we are dragging this thread way off the topic of a Pro DX body.
After 22 pages, there is something left to say that is on topic?

You certainly did say it several times, and I still don't buy it. But oh well. Let's wait seven to ten years and we will settle it then. Loser buys the other the cheapest FX camera available. Ah forget it, I have no use for a $400 camera.

Donaldjose, I bet that a D400 already exists in several parallel universes.

In all seriousness, I think that everyone will have to settle for a 54 megapixel FX. But I have been wrong before and maybe this is one of those times. I would be happy for all.

I don't expect to see D400/D9300 from Nikon anytime soon if ever and I've woken up from the day dream of D400/D9300, However I'd play around with the idea of sticking in the higher 28 MP sensor, full pro control layout, and fully magnesium framed chassis on D7200 body with 8 fps I'd call that a pro DX body. :))

I'm waiting for D7200 (Body only)

Wow. 36 posts in the blink of an eye.

What the heck are we going to talk about when the D400 comes out?
    Always learning.

7200 better than D300?! 7100 and 7200 are plastic shit, only new!!! D300 is still good camera and for now there is no camera to replace it(price, body quality). We need next generation of D300/D300s!

If you compare the final results, I don't think you will be able to tell which images are taken with a plastic body and ones were taken with a magnesium alloy body

You will seen a big difference, in the IQ, between a current generation sensor / processor and ones designed 7 years ago

If build quality is important get a D4s

You want to talk about "plastic shit"? Tell that to somebody who came from Canon T2i Now that's a plastic shit!!! :-) but seriously I don't see any fair justification for you to group D7xxx series as plastic. The IQ, Sensor, and the CPUs are light years ahead on the D7xxx than the "Pro" body of D3xx. The D7xxx has magnesium chassis/frame albeit rear and top/bottom. However it has right amount of structural rigidity and the weather sealing to boot. and lastly 12 MP vs 24MP, and Expeed1 vs Expeed 4? come on man?! :p

You got a -1 from me for grouping most readers (and in fact members) of this forum as "operators of plastic shit". I am the proud owner of a D800, but many DX owners are better photographers than I and get better results. Also, this "plastic shit" is better than 90% of what is being offered by competitors. It is this market that keeps Nikon and Canon in business.

D7100 and D7200 are both constructed with a magnesium-alloy body and composite combination. This is for the D7100, but the D7200 is almost identical:

    http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/dslr/d7100/features03.htm

"The magnesium alloy employed for the top and rear covers endows the camera with high robustness and durability, despite its compact, lightweight body. The body is effectively sealed at various locations, ensuring weather-resistance and dust-prevention performance, equivalent to the D800 series and D300S."

So yeah, pretty much "plastic shit". I wouldn't buy one if I were you, more for the rest of us ;-)

My 7100 is feeling really jealous and lonely now that I have been taking only the 810 out for shooting recently.
I do really miss the U1 and U2 modes from the 7100 though... I frequently accidentally bump one of shutter speed or aperture dials on the 810 when walking.

Is there a way to assign one of the buttons on the 810 to be able to cycle through the custom banks? What I would love is to be able to look through the viewfinder, and similar to assigning a button to be able to cycle through the various crop modes, I would like to assign a button to be able to cycle through the custom banks. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!

@manhattanboy, This is off-topic, so if you have any questions let's take it to a D810 thread. You can lock both the shutter speed and aperture dials, see page 126 and 350 in your D810 manual:

lol guys may have just got trolled ;-) but if you just read the sentiment and not the literal then he does have a point.

I had a D200 clone.. and needed to upgrade, the D300 was not better and I was forced to get a D7000 a few years back when the D400 had not appeared. It was supposed to have been a way to tide me over while waiting for this mythical D400 .. it was a REALLY painful "downgrade" from the pro body to the D7000. so yes I feel his pain when he calls it "plastic shit" .. I have resigned myself to the fact that I may never get the D400. @faateris move on and just take photos !

    forced????
Sorry. With the greatest respect. I don't understand
No one forced you to do anything of the sort

If you wanted a pro body why did you not get a D800 or a S/H D700

    $2000+ difference .. and the D400 was around the corner 4 years ago ;-) (+FX lenses = $5000 upgrade)
Took me a couple of years to warm to the D7000 body style.. not going near a D8xx in case it reignites my muscle memory of the Pro bodies ;-) and I start pining for it again :-) (instead of just using my "plastic shit").

I, for one, believe Nikon will soon produce the "mythical D400"
    Nothing has changed them :)

Nothing has changed, but the D400 continues to be everything we want it to be. That is one of the best things with cameras that don't exist. It is of course also very lightweight and easy on the battery.

    I understand why people want
A profession camera for under $2000
    8-10 fps
    High pixel density ( reach)
    Lightweight
High IQ at high ISO values
    High DR
    51 focus points
A tough weather-sealed full metal body
    EXPEED4

I also understand, why MS MOTO might want it to be mirrorless

But why cripple such a camera by making it Dx?

Dx would not take full advantage of any of, the F mount,, wide and superwide, primes or zooms
    such as the 24mm f1.4

If there wasn't a great interest in a D400 the threads about such a body would not be as long as they are. It has become an emotional subject. Hopefully, Nikon will soon produce a great one and sell tons of them helping Nikon survive to make even more great stuff for us. We all have a vested interest in Nikon selling as much as possible.
  • IronheartIronheart Posts: 3,017Moderator
Hey I resemble that remark! Apparently it does if you want to photograph hydrogen-alpha wavelengths only... Sorry I couldn't resist, and yes I agree with your argument that the 810a was an easy mod for Nikon.

    PitchBlack:

"10 diehards does not a market make." Agreed. If Nikon does produce a D400 we will see how many units they sell. Until then, we don't know.
  • sevencrossingsevencrossing Posts: 2,800Member

    Until then, we don't know.
and I don't think we will know if they do
Have Nikon told us how many D300s they sold
