And, this is really about how it was made, holding the camera at arms length over the side of the gondola I was in, pointing toward the subject, pressing the release at about 10 FPS while panning around to grab the image. I needed one of those movable back screens maybe...LOL
It is showing the water filling the tender of the steam locomotive on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR. (Uses about 5,000 gallons in 120 miles, I am told.)
On my monitor I would like to see the image a bit darker, more guts in the flowers, more in the highlights. It does falls in well with my "average" photo IMO.
Sevencrossing: good example of "average." IMO you have a good subject but it lacks "punch" and "drama." This is my idea of what would make it better and more focused on the subject (fence and flowers).:
There weren't enough pixels in the photo to work with but you can get the idea I think. Tighter cropping to eliminate lines (sloping roof of building in the background) and elements (purple flower on left) which are not an essential part of the composition, darker colors, more contrast, and sharper. Just my thoughts. I think it is a stronger photo this way but still may remain in the range of average?
I should add: I think discussing examples like this is very helpful. We all have different eyes and different ideas of what appeals to us. Seeing those differences can be instructive and help us.
Addition: Thank you for posting the original file. Here is the photo with my "improvements" IMO. You can click on the photo and it will take you to flicker where you can view it in larger sizes.
In this version I warmed up the stones quite a bit because I like warm tones but that can be a personal preference.
My wife thought I was just nuts, taking this picture. I liked the light, so I worked my way around the coffee table, looking for a decent composition, and got this exposure before she yanked me back to taking family pictures.
Guys, it would be better if you posted this extensive critique in the right thread. This is PAD. a few words is one thing, but repeated reposting isn't on.
Hi Jonnyapple, yes sometimes we have a hiatus in doing things that are important. Yahoo kind of messed up Flickr with a new logon procedure (in my judgment) and it took me a while to get attention from their support group to get back onto my own page. But good to see you back here!
Heartyfisher, I think that Donaldjose is on the right track. Ggbutcher, nice image. Perhaps average, but I really like the light. Perhaps a word with your family is warranted.....
Msmoto, perhaps your image is average, but it is done well and I like it. The framing is perfect. Perhaps above average then? What is average?

any one else think it needs to be a bit darker
