Why buy the lens in NYC? All us New Yorkers order from out of state to avoid sales tax! uh...I mean....which I of course legally declare on my tax forms at the end of the year
NYC prices (even with taxes) stil probably much cheaper than prices in Argentina, if you can find the lens at all there? With the state of the Peso, every imported product becomes very expensive even in the black market.
When I crossed into Argentina (last year), Argentine customs made me declare the serial numbers of every piece of gear I had including all of my cameras, GPS, etc., on a special form -- they even made official note of my iPhone. All to prevent reselling of goods without duty paid. I was crossing on a remote border by motorcycle from Chile (while it was snowing) and had to hurry to find shelter for the night, but they didn't show any mercy in terms of the customs paperwork involved.
I lived in Buenos Aires for a year when I was 11-12 years old (1998-1999), so I was too young to really appreciate the subtleties of the art/culture/law there. I do remember they were artificially pegging the peso to be equal to the dollar, but you could feel the control slipping, as prices on everything kept rising at an absurd rate. We moved right before it hit the fan, or so I've heard. I'd love to go back.
But back on point, yes it would be cheaper at Adorama than in BA or Rome, but you should just order it online and have it shipped to a friend who lives in NYC (everybody has one of those, right?), and then go grab a beer with him/her during those 8 hours. Time and money way better spent.
@ Golf007sd, ha, ha...there are a few things we could take to curb the compulsive buying that we're all probably guilty of. But that wouldn't be any fun now would it?
@Rx4Photo and @Golf007sd - I can honestly say that I don't think you would ever regret buying this lens. I certainly haven't and it is in my bag virtually everywhere I go no matter what I am going to shoot. For the record, it wasn't a compulsive buy for me but it was a "want" over a "need." Aren't most purchases? I have found it to be a lot more useful than originally imagined.
Now, I have to get back to my shopping for more gear ....
You two are not helping me....you guys both gave me the "blue pill." X_X
I have played with this lens and without question it is awesome. I guess all I have to do is press the buy button and get my month started with a nice purchase....yes?

Ok the blue pill went down with a nice cold glass of water. Found a great deal on one for $750 and thus I pulled the trigger. Soon I will have my first non-Nikon lens in my bag....and as you all know it rocks-the-house. :-bd \:D/

@Rx4Photo & @Golf007sd : This is one of the best lens purchases I have ever made. It's crazy sharp edge to edge with so little distortion. I'm constantly stunned by this lens. I used it on a shoot here in Italy yesterday:
Is the handle bar glowing?
next to the Fuji X this is something that I always wanted since the first time I encountered it. I have been shooting Chicago for 6 months and with the d800 and 24-70 i have taken great detailed images. One of the main reasons for going with the Fuji is because of Weight.
I looked Into this lens but I figured that I would give Fuji a try during the sales.
I'm with Golf on the blue pill. If this lens combo produces awesome images it may be my next purchase to try.
I'm beyond happy with the Fuji but I still favor the Nikon for the lack of shutter lag and easy to adjust settings on the fly. I may return the 18-55 and get this lens as I have been shooting st 23mm (35mm equivalent ) with pleasing results. I get noticed less and people are more willing to get a photograph taken.
My only requirement Is that It produces good ooc jps for my street shooting. I'll stick to raw for studio, projects and paid Gigs.
Vipmediastar_JZ: I have played with this lens on the D800 and I can tell you hands down that is does a "awesome" job. I have spent plenty of time investigating and scrutinizing this lens more than any other lens I have ever considered getting and each time it has hit a home run.
I'm very pleased I made the move in getting it. I now have 4 lenses that will never stay home whenever I go out shooting. Dam it now I need another backpack as well.....muhaaaaaaa

Good to hear golf. Prior to last week I was shooting the 24-70 @35mm and I didn't enjoy simply because of the weight. I looked into the 35mm f2 but decided that the sigma was still king. I can say that I have improved taking pics with 35mm FL.... With the Fuji. There is a farmers market today. Walked up to the stands and took pics of people and they didn't even notice. The shutter is almost silent and with a remote lease it's even more discrete. I been visiting local shops to play with the lens but nobody has it.
Had to walk out in the backyard and play with my Sigma 35 after reading all these posts. The clouds made provided a great opportunity to capture some depth. I did cheat and ran it trough Nik HDR Pro.
It is official, I got my new toy yesterday. Although I have not fires a single shot with it (yet), I have been holding it in my hands and giving it a thorough examination from the outside...and I much say: this is a very sexy lens not to mention very well designed and built. I'm very pleased with my discussion in getting it. (*) (*) (*)

Thanks for the link golf. I read the review. I took a 15 walk afterwards and ran into 3 French photographers doing a route 66 tour. We chatted and one of them had the sigma and d800 and I took pics with that of the group and then they took a pic of me and I also took pics of them with my Fuji camera. They used to shoot with medium format and they mentioned how the 24-70 was great with the d700 but the sigma is better on the d800.
Even with the battery grip that they had the combo was not heavy.

I like craziness that way
