What's your favourite Nikon Wide Angle Lens?

shotkitshotkit Posts: 3Member
I put together a round up of what I consider to be the best wide angle lenses in 2016: http://www.shotkit.com/best-wide-angle-lens/ I wanted to see if you agreed with my choices, and if I've made any glaring omissions, please let me know. Also if any of you have any great images taken with the Nikon 10-24 f/3.5 - 4.5 and would like to have them featured, do let me know :-)

Cheers

    I have the 14-24mm 2.8, 15mm 3.5AIS, 20mm 2.8AIS, 24mm 2.8AIS and 28mm AIS. My favorite is the 15 followed by the 28.

This is taken with the 10-24. Feel free to link to it.

For primes I'm pretty happy with my 20mm f/1.8G
Many folks swear by the samyang 14mm, even though it is manual focus, for both astrophotography and events. Our own @Pistnbroke uses it at weddings if I'm not mistaken.

I agree, they both look like decent lenses on paper. However I had to leave some out of the line up since I've had no actual experience with them. I'll do some more research into them both - are you using them?

Samyang 14mm FX ,,you will always with a 10mm on a DX...there are just not enough pixels on DX

I have used the Tamron 15-30 VC and i own the Tokina 16-28. Both are excellent, i believe the Tokina 16-28 to be the best value around

I like the AF 24mm F2.8, same optics as the AIS version, but often cheaper on the used market. I also have a 16-35mm F4G VR, which is shaper, but too bulky for traveling.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

I use the Nikon 14-24 2.8 lens, not my main lens, but when I use it, I appreciate it's qualities and it ends given me a resurge in the use of this lens. Yes it is heavy and big, but thats a small compromise when compared to the results it can give.
Filters I use the Fotodiox 145 system mainly for the polariser Filter.

Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 is my best wide lens and more flexible than a prime. I also have the Rokinon 12mm f/2.8 manual that is very good and if space is limited in my camera bag it goes with me. When that happens I always miss the Nikon and wish I had made room.

    Hi there,

I'm a user of the DX 12-24/F4, and love it. Have posted these links previously, but hey, whatcha, my story is still the same about this lens.

You could of course go super wide with the Sigma 4.5 2.8 Circular Fisheye,

I use the 20-35 2.8 Nikkor for some wide, the Sigma 10-20 DX for some, the Tokina 10-17 for when we are underwater or purposely want the fish eye look......but fish eye is pretty distorted and as I have spent as much time as anyone I know trying to figure out what a Yellowfin Tuna, or a Blackfin Tuna or a Great White Shark view of the world is.....I was in med school with high liner grades and heading toward being a human eye surgeon, but my swerve back to finish the PhD in environmental, aquatic science was stimulated by my interest in all things aquatic....so I follow fish eye lens offerings but as soon as it gets greatly different than My vision or that of say, a Rainbow Trout.....I save my money for glass that doesn't make my head ache when I see the resultant image.

For normal wide shots I love my Nikon 14-24mm. It is an easy lens to take good pictures with, although big and clunky. I have the WonderPana 145 system, and tons of filters...

I also have a Sigma 8mm f/3.5 Cir Fish, which I like to have fun with. It's pretty useless for other things, but for fun, it's great.

For landscapes the Zeiss 25mm f/2 is awesome.

For DX I like the 10-24 and FX the 20/1.8G. I also like the Rokinon 14/2.8 occasionally.

I have the Nikon 14mm to 24 mm F/2.8 and the 10.5mm F/2.8 DX. I usually put the 14mm to 24mm on one body and the Nikon 24mm to 70mm F/2.8 on the other when I am out and about shooting. Always find something to use the 14mm to 24mm on. The Nikon 10.5 F/2.8 DX is a nice lens to use when you just want to have fun.

I put the Nikon 14-24 on my D500 this weekend and shot an Indian Motorcycle grand opening. I have to tell you I like what I saw. Yes, it's equiv. to 21-36mm but that worked extremely well. The nice thing is, very little distortion on the wider end. That lens continues to be a workhorse. Having the tilt screen allowed for some very interesting compositions with the lens as well.

The one lens that has been in my bag for over 20 years and still amazes me is the 28mm AIs f/2.8. The 20mm AFS f1.8 is also in my bag seem to be an OK lens. I just got a 14-24 f/2.8 Nikkor, jury's still out but looking good. I trying to decide if I want to get rid of a long term friend the 15mm F/3.5 AIS. I really think the 14-24 will do the job that I need for it to do. I sure the 15 will almost never be used again and being it has some value, I think I'm ready to list it this weekend on fleaBay.

When the 15 is used with the D810, it really is a nice small package.

I have the 14-24 2.8, the 28 2.8 AIS and the 15 3.5 AIS (also the 20 2.8 and 24 2.8). The 28 and 15 are my favorite wide angles. Sure the 14-24 is technically amazing, but there is something missing when I am not using those AIS lenses. That 15 is worth a pretty penny. Make sure you get top dollar.

That said, I use my AIS collection for landscapes at f/5.6 or less. I really doubt any modern lens is much better than those at that f-stop when it comes to sharpness. My big "but" is there can be a lot of ghosting on the 15 and the 14-24 has that controlled really well. However, if someone wanted a landscape set, I would recommend that they seriously consider what I have done with my "core landscape set" below:

    20 2.8 AIS
    24 2.8 AIS
    28 2.8 AIS
    40 2.0 Voightlander Ultron
    50 1.2 AIS.

Nice and light, small and less than $3k.

Except for the big gaping hole I have between 28 and 40 which I will fix with the 35, this covers 90% of likely landscape shots and half of the remaining 10% is more likely to be shot at longer than 50 - at least in my style.

Setting aside the wide angle vs ultra-wide angle lens distinction my favorite Nikon wide lens is the 14-24 f/2.8. I do however prefer primes when I do not need the flexibility of a zoom. In that case I would most likely reach for the Zeiss 15 f/2.8, 25 f/2 or the Sigma 35 f/1.4.
    Occasionally a decent image ...

The reason I like the 28mm f/2.8 AIS the most is because I can do a 360degree panoramic with my D3s and print it @ native DPI right out of the camera @ 96 inches or 8 feet. That's perfect to mount on standard size mounting boards. Beyond that a special expensive board must be used or special canvas mounts would be needed.

That lens has zero distortion, it also can be mounted reversed for unbelievable close-up's. @ f/5.6 nothing is sharper IMHO.

I have also done focus stacking when doing panoramic photos with great success with that 28mm lens.
