Nikon 1 V3

Well the Nikon 1 V3 is announced.

I have been tempted with the V series and this one is closer to what I would prefer in Look and designed grips, etc. Specs look good as well. Flash shoe or controol output?

The hang up - $1,200 again! (Admin: confirm that it DOES come with the grip and viewfinder* from main page.)
Sorry but this would have to compete with the Fuji XT-1 and the Oly EM-1 for IQ. Oh and don't forget the new Nikon Mini-DSLR that is suppose to be coming and Sony's A6000. Maybe it can, but I'm not betting on it. Sorry but that is $600 more than what it worth IMHO.

What are the thoughts? We already have established all the 1-series perform well. But $1,200 well? Against the competition?

I have not really look at any of the Nikon 1s but what advantage ( apart from 20fps) would the V3 have over say the D7100?

I Agree, I don't see much from the Nikon 1 V1 and V2 in the big shops in Holland. I think that is not going to change with these prices for the V3.

Those who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it!

Third time lucky for the Nikon 1, Well it keeps on improving, I bough the V1 and then the V2 so might as well the buy the V3 when prices settle, Let's face it, it's lot prettier than the V2, however strangely enough the V2 does grow on you 18million pixels is where it should have started and improved video are positive moves.

I just want a sensor which is more the size of an APS-C or Micro 4/3rds. The resolution limits of a lens become more significant as sensor size decreases. If there were a Micro 4/3rds body which would work well with my "F" mount lenses, I would go for it, but the Nikon 1 sensor is so very small…..mmmm…and, the price….how do they justify this except through what marketing says folks will pay for it….grumble…. :))

And, TTJ, here is "What's in the box" at B & H for $1200...

V3 looks the nicest of the 1 series for sure, nice features, but I don't see $1000+ in value for a 1 series, especially when Nikon have discounted them so massively in the past.

I have a J1 that I use in place of a compact, love it for happy snaps and it was a steal at $300. In strong light you can get some good shots with it. But for $1200 I'm thinking D7100...

It looks nice - just like the V1 and V2. But the price is way to high. I dont understand why the EVF is an add on??? Why not a build in EVF?

It is a perfect bridge camera - why not give it a bridge-camera price? Sad that we all have to talk about the price - it would be better if we all talked about the performance - hint to Nikon: you are off the mark.

I'm still not sure why they gave it such high end specs and decided to put a non-standard hot shoe on it. How cool would it be to put real Nikon speedlights on it?

It seems like another cash grab to me on that end. I mean, they made all the other AF lenses compatible. Why not speedlights?

On the other hand, it seems like a lot of product for that money. But at $1,200, I could just buy plenty of other mirrorless cameras, like a lot of other members said. Or I could just buy an RX100 for half the price and call it a day.

Strangely enough, there's no body only ordering option- the grip and the viewfinder bought separately add up to about $350, so this is probably about $950.

I would like a "pocketable" DSLR and this is getting close. The package seems to include what I would want anyway if I had to buy everything separately. It will depend upon the IQ at higher ISO where I would use a camera I can get into a large pocket. My preference remains for a DX sensor though. Yes, price is high and a DX DSLR will provide a much better value.

Well this was unexpected- the V3 uses MicroSD cards apparently, according to DPReview.

That is a bit of an inconvenience.

In Germany the price is € 1.249,-- for the complete set and € 849,-- for the body only.

It is a lot of money. But hands down, as a Nikon user with a package of Nikon lenses it is still the better option than going Fuji or Olympus. At least for me, I have a Nikon 1 lens from the J2, I also have the FT 1 Adaptor, so I really need the body only.
The question for me is, if it is capable of doing time-laps, a feature which Nikon sadly dropped between the V1 and the V2. If it does, I think Nikon can rightfully advertise the V3 as the "DSLR owner's dream".

Did someone find a soft copy of the manual already?

If Nikon wants this much for a V3, I will need a new pacemaker to deal with a mirrorless D400 and or D5. :-S

Danish price for a kit with body, 10-30, grip and EVF is $1,866. Nice camera. But I doubt they will sell many at that price. 70-300 nikon 1 zoom is $ 1,567

Target user, soccer/football mom with tablet that has a micro SD card slot. ;)

If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

Why should a micro SD card be a problem? Just put it in an SD adapter to insert in your computer or use the built in Wi-Fi to download to your computer. It is one way to save some space as you reduce the size of the camera. I will be very interested in the IQ for 18mp at base ISO and seeing how high you can go before the image is unusable. I would expect you cannot go above about 800 to 1,000 ISO and still have good IQ. The ability to use other Nikon lenses can be quite a plus. The V3 with a 10-30 zoom and an 18mm f1.8 could be quite usable for snapshots which will never be enlarged more than 8x10. I do wish Nikon would produce something like this with a DX sensor though. Maybe the rumored DXXXX will be it.

Not to mention that Micro SDHC cards are dirt cheap. You can get 32GB USH-1 cards for $19.

I guess I'm alone in thinking the kit price with the grip, the new PD zoom lens, and the EVF ain't all that bad. I will wait a bit to see if the price drops, but the V3 may be the one that pushes me over the edge to finally get into the 1" sensor and 2.7 crop mode with the rest of my Nikkor lenses.

You're not alone. I'll be buying the kit and the 70-300 around May-June if it's available.

I use a D4, D800e, and a V1 with the holly trinity of zooms, the 80-400 and a 105mm macro. I love my V1 with it's adaptor with a 70-200 f/2.8 or 80-400 lens for wildlife shots. But, that combination is still too heavy and awkward for travel.
Like Ironheart, I will try the new kit and 70-300. Yes, I was (am) crazy enough to pre-order. Now, how should I test the image quality to see just how big of a fool I am? Any of your suggestions for a test would be appreciated. What criteria would you like to see for the IQ test? Msmoto lives nearby so maybe she can help set up an IQ test.

I haven't been paying attention to microSD card prices. Didn't know they were so cheap now.

I'm interested but wondering what the body only price will be.
This may be flawed logic, but..
US kit price on B&H is $1200 (all rounding up)
    grip alone = $160
    viewfinder alone = $300
    10-30 lens alone = $300
    So V3 body is = $410?!?

I imagine microSD cards should be dirt cheap because of widespread use in smartphones.

According to Dpreview Nikon will not be offering body only kits in the US. My guess is most dealers will anyway. My guess would be $799 body only.

Any one know if the V3 has CLS master capability ?

  • @heartyfisher No it has not. I saw your question answered by the V3 - V2 comparison on Nikon Rumors. What a miss he ...

So far prices between Germany and the US were pretty simple: just replace the $-sign with the the €-sign.
The V3 kit seems to be marginal different.
But I also would guess the body only would cost in the US around $ 800,--

No CLS master capability is a miss. But it has a normal hot-shoe, right? So any Nikon Master flash or the SU800 would work. Is it so?
