As we now have heard the "rumor" of a Nikon D9300, a thread to begin the various wishes, fantasies, dreams, and general outside the lines comments on what folks think will be coming from Nikon in this respect.

Maybe, this is the replacement for the D300s…… how interesting to just stick a 9 in front of D300…. LOL.

My idea (guess) as to specifications…..
Native ISO up to 12,800, 8-9 FPS, 24MP, latest processor, buffer good for 50 images at full resolution, two memory cards, D4s focusing, and a price tag of ….$2195.

^^sold to me! And I think you're pricing is pretty close. For those who think this is going to be a $1,500 body so as not to cannibalize the D600 (a totally different beast IMO), I'll have some of what they're having.

@Msmoto: Good specs! I really like the buffer size. Lets hope Nikon doesn't hold back on anything. There should be room for a dx top model.

I always thought about a D300s but could never afford it. The new D9300 would be nice to have but more camera then I need or can afford. My d5000 has been good to me so I think the d7xxx line will be a nice upgrade.

It is most likely going to be for those wildlife or sports shooters I think. Out of the price range for the average person like myself....unless I sell a couple lenses to fund it ;-)

    Sounds like a dx D4

The price tag is probably realistic knowing how Nikon overprices things. While the pros will buy, I think it is not going to sell as well as Nikon would hope as prosumers would have to buy the D9300 over the D800 at that price. And from a consumer standpoint, for the price of a new 9300, someone could buy a refurb 7100 AND 610.

I'd bet the street price will be $1695.00 that $500 more than a 7100. The price should be slightly under the D610 IMHO.

If it a solid build with Msmoto specs it should sell well. I would like to see a faster 16mp sensor that's like a D4dx with a add on battery "MB-?? that uses the same battery that the D4 uses.

So pretty much the suggest retail as the D300s? I love your optimism. Again, sign me up.

In regards to price, the jump from D7100 to D300s is about $550. My guess of $2195 is adding $500 to the D300s. I wouuld love to see a 16MP sensor, but think this is not going to be the case as the current D7100 is 24 MP and an upgraded D7100 sensor is possibly what will be used. I would think no AA Filter will be used.

Mind you, I am only guessing (and hoping).

Yes, anything higher and sales would be too low to cover R&D/marketing. The last thing Nikon needs right now are more bodies sitting in a warehouse unsold.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

Sadly, with Nikon's pricing scheme for the 1v3 and other new products, having a bunch sit in the warehouse is exactly what I expect will happen.
Thom has a nice diagram illustrating this:

+1 on your specs. From my perspective the buffer does not have to be that big 25 to 30 meets my requirements. Regarding price, I am in up to $2,395.

When you look at the last few lens upgrades and the D4 and Df body prices, it's going to be over $2K. Disagree with framer. If Nikon makes it, they will come and buy it. There are lots of D300/D300s photographers who have moved on to the D7100 or D600/D610....I really believe that they will jump on the D9300 body.

Here are my requirements plus some dream features:
+ Larger magnesium body than D7100, like the D800
    + Full weather seals like D4s & D800
+ Native ISO up to 12,800
    + 7 to 8 FPS
    + 24MP (don't need any thing higher)
    + Latest processor (Exceeds 4)
+ Buffer good for 25 - 30 images at full resolution
+ Two memory cards (would like CFs or CF and SD or newer faster card technology)
+ D4s focusing capability (keep those focus points spread out, NOT like D610)
+ WiFi capable, don't care if built in or have to use the optional plug in unit
    +GPS is not required.
+ Faster FPS with battery grip
    + Tweaked WB
+ And finally give us a surprise, some thing to make us say, "Yea!, good idea!"
    + Price point: $2,195 to $2,499

My D7100 is only 7 months old and I would still preorder immediately after it's announced.

My conclusion to the $1695 was a $500 bump from the next level DX camera. The D300s price is not relevant because is a discontinued or to be real soon. Used D300s are $600-$800. Nikon needs to fill a gap at that price point in DX. It should be priced less than the D610.

I feel it will have 24mp and no AAF.

I'd guess body-wise it will be a mini D800 (in the same way that a D600 was basically a "maxi" D7000). Saves on design costs.

24mp no AA, 8fps, D4s focusing system, raw buffer in the 20s, dual cards, expeed 4.

I think they will keep the price below the D610. Not because they couldn't get more, but because from a marketing perspective Nikon want people to think FX is more prestigious/desirable.

I think it will be in the $1800 price range also with the above specs. However, it seems a little strange after all this time that Nikon would just slap a D7100 sensor in a D300 body. I would be fine with that with the specs others have mentioned. I would certainly like a higher build quality internally so the AF system doesn't crap out like it did on my D7100.. What I see as a "D9300" is the potential for a "new" line. I personally would love a 1.3 crop body with a 24 MP sensor and a 16 MP DX mode that could provide the same ISO performance as a D800 in theory. Of course that is me smoking crack, lol. I would also love to see a 5" IPS touch screen similar to Droid cell phones. How about a 32 MP sensor with pixel binning to allow an 8 MP output with super high usable ISO? Perhaps an advanced AF system that uses phase and contrast detection together to eliminate fine tuning? Just some crazy thoughts...

Hmmmm. They could have some fun with us if they dropped in a hybrid focus system and electronic shutter option. Otherwise, there seems to be general consensus on what to expect. I'd guess 1,949USD.

I don't think Nikon is in general overpriced.
    D7100, D610, D800: good value for money!!
I'm sure D9300 will be good value as well, so 1695 or 1795$

Ok, Nikon 1, the dF, their battery grips, their wi-fi-thingys, and some lenses ARE very overpriced.

I support Ms Moto's specs except I will guess the price will be $1999.99 unless it is a new body with a built vertical grip like the D4 body (but I don't think that will happen). Nikon may surprise us with a new sensor which has some of the ability recently added to the Nikon 1 sensor. That could be wonderful.

+1 with MsMoto & donalddejose. Right at $2k as it has always been and just about the same as the D610 - just to make choices harder. "Do you want all the pro feature set of the D800, or a FX sensor for the same price?" Nikon prices their DSLRs & lenses less than Canon and usually less than any of Sony's high end stuff - by that set they are not overpriced at all.

All the specs of the D800 except the finder and with a DX sensor. My guess it will have the D4s's AF. If they do that it will be a hit with a lot of people.

LOL, at the "sad" comments on pricing!! Don't lie, its fun speculating on pricing.

And FYI, Canon's entry full frame body refurbished only costs $1300 and new $1600 (which is pretty cheap for entry into the FF world).

+1 Photobug. I'd take one if it's not priced more than $2500 but only as long as it's minus the oil slick.

I think this continual and single focus on how much it will cost is absolutely stupid and absurd. It is very easy to know the ballpark by last systems. D300s was $1800 in 2009. Add 3% for each year that accounts for the increase of cost for manufacturing which equals about $270 and you get $2,100. So it will be $1,800 - $2,400. It will sit just below a new D610, and slightly higher than a D610 refurbished. This isn't rocket science and is quite simple. Nothing has happened that would substantially change the cost of how a camera is made.

seems to be made by many (not all) that look at camera's as status symbols and not tools. I think it also speaks to how much people understand the tech that is in camera's and what that means for a photographer.
It is the ability of the camera that is important and how that compares to current models, and other brand options at a price point.

Canon's 6D was $1,900 when released. 7D was $1,800 (2009ish). (Canon does do a better job in dropping their prices each year which helps them move old inventory.) The refurbished price means squat to the new DSLR market. It only makes a "purchase" decision for the Second buyer. It was already purchased once and the margin was already achieved so companies do not care. A Refurbished item sales goal is to achieve break-even and is usually a customer support line item.
