I'm giving up and going for a Fuji X100s or an Xpro2 when it comes out or a OMD M-5 with a 25mm 1.4 & 17mm 1.8. That's where my $2,000 are going - after I sell the old stuff.
If someone produces a crop sensor mirrorless which will take the "F" Mount lenses I have and allow full functionality, .....I will no doubt go this route unless Nikon comes through with something very nice in the way of a D300s replacement. As in ISO 12,800, 8 FPS, D4 focusing....
I will bet, if I buy a Fuji or other for about $2,000, the D400 will be introduced thirty days later....
A few questions for those of you are waiting for the D400
If, the release date, price and specification was announced to day
1) what lens(s) would you use with it 2) what ( if any) existing camera, would it be replace 3) what in the spec/price, release date might stop you buying it 4 ) If the spec/price, release date was not what you are hoping for, what would you buy instead

1) 300 2.8 VR2 & 500 F4 VR 2) D7000 & D300s 3) dont know .. 4) a future FF like D800 but with less MP and more fps
1.) I would use these lenses. Nikon DX lenses: 18-55mm kit lens, 35mm f1.8 and 18-200 VR. Other DX lenses: Tokina 11-16 f2.8. Nikon FX lenses: 50mm f1.4, 60mm f2.8D micro, 85mm f1.8D, 105 f2 DC, 80-200 f2.8, 70-200 f4 and 300mm f4. Other FX lenses: Voightlander 40mm f2. Tokina 100mm f2.8 macro. Possibly also a Nikon 35-70 f2.8 D or a 28-70 f2.8 AF-S.
2. It would replace my D7100.
3. If image quality at high ISO is not two stops better than the D7100 I would not buy it. Release date does not matter.
4. I would not buy anything instead if it did not have high ISO image quality two stops better than the D7100. I would just keep shooting my D7100 for DX uses until Nikon produces a substantial improvement.
But that is just me. Other people would have other needs and other uses for a D400.
I am referring to the use of an adapter which is fully functional. There are some bodies like this but I do not know of any which retain all the functions of the lens, AF, etc.
1) what lens(s) would you use with it......24mm f/1.4 on crop sensor 2) what ( if any) existing camera, would it be replace .....D90 3) what in the spec/price, release date might stop you buying it ISO <12,800, FPS <8, price >$2,000 4 ) If the spec/price, release date was not what you are hoping for, what would you buy instead...D800
I agree the D800 is fabulous. The more I use mine the more I like it. But a dedicated D400 DX sensor should be able to perform better than the D800 FX sensor in DX crop mode. I think that is what Nikon is trying to produce so it can sell both the D800 and the D400 to users because each can be marketed as better than the other in some important way. So how can the D400 be better than a D800 and not just a few hundred dollars less expensive?
1) what lens(s) would you use with it -> a lot of FX lenses including the exotic teles (see Nikon, DX buys FX $$) 2) what ( if any) existing camera, would it be replace -> complement D300, possibly D800. 3) what in the spec/price, release date might stop you buying it -> I'd pay up to $2500 if it has the basics right (ISO/FPS/MP/AF). 4 ) If the spec/price, release date was not what you are hoping for, what would you buy instead -> April 1st is my deadline. No D400 then it'll be a D800 then. I'd buy a D400 whenever it comes out.. but I'll be missing a kick ass DX body in my main seasons (Spring/Summer).
I know so many who want this D400 that it is amazing. I plan on seeing what a D7200 or whatever it gets labelled and see what the initial review is. I also will possibly buy a D400 if the reviews are good enough. I always fail to see the logic of all the secrecy about upcoming releases. I do know of other industries that I have way more heavily invested in than cameras and they do not practice such secrecy. On the other hand they are Scandinavian companies not outfits from Japan. Our small business makes very heavy use of cameras and there actually are now way fewer Nikons than video gear which has by the way proven very rugged and dependable and for less money.
For me as a person who is probably slightly on the side of getting the 7000's replacement than a 400 (If it will ever exist anyway) the questions are still probably worth answering. 1) As I do not have many lenses yet (and really do not need many most of the time) I will be using my sigma 17-50 f2.8 and my kit 55-200. I depending on jobs I may get to use a 70-200 F2.8 too. I will probably buy a prime or 2 some time in the future too but the body may be more a priority. 2)D5000 3)Too close specs to the D7000's replacement and or significantly more expensive than it. 4)As said above I am likely to buy the d7000's replacement unless the "400" has significantly better specs/value.
1) what lens(s) would you use with it > 12-24, 18-200, 35-70 2.8, 150 2.8 2) what ( if any) existing camera, would it be replace > Fuji S5PRO (D200 clone). 3) what in the spec/price, release date might stop you buying it > I guess i think what ever Nikon wants to spec it as is ok with me ! :-) but the release date ? Sigh... 4 ) If the spec/price, release date was not what you are hoping for, what would you buy instead > Maybe the D800. But the APS-C Fuji X-E1 is starting to look really good ! Esp the new 27mm Pancake Prime or the 35mm 1.4. prime. or the 18mm F2.0 prime.. even the 18-55 F2.8-F4 looks intriguing and so does their 55-200 F3.5-4.8. I will probably wait for the release of the 27mm and 55-200 and see the reviews before I jump ship ! I am not into the wide angle so i wont miss the 12-24 and its resale is good too! Just that one lens could almost get me the XE1. My fav is the 150Macro but i can get an adapter for the Fuji X Mount. and loosing AF is no big deal with macro.. I use manual anyway. Hmm the X-E1 sure is looking the way to go for me ! :-).. * X-E1 with 27mm pancake. = Take everywhere kit. * Main kit - 18mm F2.0 , 27mm F2.8 and 55-200. that would be about the expected price of the D400. - resale of 12-24mm..... Looks like it may be an April Birthday present for myself !
I like shooting with 2 cameras when I am "shooting" so I can see me carrying my D7000 and the X-E1and some combination of lenses! Whee !! bye bye D400!

I still shoot with a D300. Picking up a D7000 when the D7100 comes because the D7000 prices will fall hard. I'll take advantage!!! Keeping my D300 of course!!! If/when a D400 comes... I'll be in line!!!
I'll stay DX as long as I'm able!!!

I'll wait until Tuesday to say I told you so but... I buy a camera and now the NR blog is predicting a D7100 announcement on Tue. Maybe or maybe it's a D400. ;-)
I have Google set to send me a notice when anything D400 is posted on line. Here's a link to a flash that is compatible with the D400, humm... This at least must mean that Nikon has put out specs for third party manufactures to use when designing accessories.
I do know of other industries that I have way more heavily invested in than cameras and they do not practice such secrecy.
Indeed. CPU manufactures provide product road-maps for at least 1-3 years in advance. Of course they talk about lines, not individual products.
There is a huge difference between computer chip manufactures, etc, than Cameras. What Intel does makes a huge difference for tens of thousands of companies. Nikon D400 road map, makes a difference only to 3rd party accessory & lens companies that compete with Nikon. I personally don't know what is so hush hush about it, but then again, if Nikon is trying to catch mistakes, they may be running batches, checking them before they even announce them. I can dream right?
I suspect an officially announced "roadmap" of future products creates two problems for a company like Nikon. !. It creates release date expectations they may not be able to meet due to various development and production issues which may come up. 2. They fear a loss of competitive advantage if the "road map" includes details beyond just the model name. Both may apply to the D400. 1. Nikon my be trying to field a "knockout" new DX sensor and having problems developing it. 3. Nikon may have been unsure if it will even produce the model or if that niche will be filled by the D7200 and the D600. Nikon may see a competitive advantage if Canon does not produce a companion model and then Nikon has the only pro-DX on the market or Nikon my see a competitive advantage if it concludes the old niche no longer exists but does not announce it will not be producing a D400 so Canon wastes funds creating a camera for a niche which no longer exists.
However, my bet is the D400 will be produced and the delay has been due to problems developing some of the technology Nikon will put into that model. I am hoping for a knockout DX sensor.
I guess I have not commented on this for a moment, I have not bought a camera since my D7000 a few months after it was you could actually buy one and get it within 2 weeks. I don't have an endless camera fund but if I had to get what I wanted this second I would find a D4 and a D800. I currently use my D700 and D7000 depeding on situation. I personally have not bought anything because of the hope for a D400, not a good reason but my current cameras work fine so I really don't need anything.
The problem I have with the D4 is normally I would use this for sports or action wildlife (birding). I see myself wanting longer lenses in situations like this (not all the time but a majority). The DX crop factor would save me from getting that newly announced 800mm and a full medical team to help solve my back problems from using it (HAHA laughing internally because the 800mm will never happen). I would use the D800 for my normal landscape or "subject" shots that don't have a lot of action and I want the details. I have seen many wishlist for the D400 if it ever comes true but for me it has to have the D4 autofocus, at least 7-8 fps, and body size/controls similar to the D700/D800. I would like to have 20 mpx and great ISO ablilities but understand having both I am pushing my luck. As long as everyone has waited for this to happen (if it does) figure we deserve it, lol.
1.) I would use these lenses. Nikon DX lenses: 18-55mm kit lens, 35mm f1.8 and 18-200 VR. Other DX lenses: Tokina 11-16 f2.8. Possibly also a Nikon 35-70 f2.8 D or a 28-70 f2.8 AF-S.
2. It would replace my D7100.
3. If image quality at high ISO is not two stops better than the D7100 I would not buy it. Release date does not matter.
What would this supposed D300s successor give you when paired with an 18-55 that a D7000 wouldn't give you already? You're already limited in terms of AF speed and all by the slow lens.
Am I missing something here?
sorry and all that but the D400 is not going to have ISO 12,800 the D800 is fabulos when combined with the 24mm f 1.4 life is too short get the 800
How would you know the D400 doesn't have ISO 12,800?
