I am hoping Paperman was joking. I cannot imagine what a "dual sensor" configuration would be.

It's like a Lego block msmoto. You can snap in whichever sensor you want, FX, DX, CX, EX. You can also stick them in the dishwasher for cleaning. Damn those oil spots :-D

    Think Sigma Foveon sensor. :D
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

I've yet to run across a wild bird photographer who isn't still hoping for a D400.

I went ahead and got myself a D7100, but if a D400 appears with maybe 8fps and a full 3-4 second buffer, maybe along with the very best autofocus system, I'd find it irresistible.

Some full frame shooters just don't understand it: there is a legitimate place for higher pixel density APS-C sensors in professional, fast bodies. I will accept the reduced high ISO performance that comes with increased pixel density (up to a point) if It allows me to capture more detail with my long lens compared to the lower pixel density of FF sensors. But I need the best AF, a big buffer, and at least 6 fps RAW, preferably more. And give me a substantial alloy sealed body that balances well and matches with a pro telephoto lens.

My new D7100 is pretty good, better than my old D300 in most ways, and IMHO better for bird photography than a D600 or D800. I can still imagine a better yet D400, but I can wait more easily for it now that I have the D7100.

It would seem doubtful to me at least, that Nikon would come up with a new technology (for them) in a crop sensor camera if it was superior to the current pro bodies...

Thus I am stuck with a guess, like all the rest here, at 8+ FPS, Buffer for at least 50 images RAW, the best focusing system...and an ISO of an almost noiseless 6400 or possibly 12,800.

But, the price...judging from the previous releases....north of $2,000.

Msmoto, I like your expectations for the D400. I hope they get serious with lower noise levels up to 6400. Your right on with the price point, it's going to be $2,300 or $2,400 for the first 2 months and then drop $100.

At that price point there are going to be lots of people that complain that its north of $2K, but when they see the features they will step up and pay it.

If Nikon had got the D600 right, the D400/D600 choice would be hard for me as it seems I do less Motorsport or wildlife than I used to. I would most likely have gone for the D600 (if it hadn't been such a PITA) but as it turned out, I don't need the stress so I will wait 6 months to hear that the D400 is issue free then go for that.

    @4thebirds How's the D7100 grip compared to the D300?
  • DaveyJDaveyJ Posts: 1,090Member
I refer to the size of the D7000, D7100 which the D800 is substantially bigger than. The D300 I own and use is also pretty clearer not as big as the D800. The D400, one would think, would be about as big as the D300 and D300s??? I do also feel there is a growing impatience for the D400. Just why it is taking the single most awaited DSLR camera in history to get produced and in buyer's hands is an absolute mystery to me. Contacts to Nikon USA and the Nikon Digital Hotline (1-800-645-6689) have more questions on where is the D400 than any other camera. Another topic for when is this going to be replaced seems to be the D600 revamp.

if the D400 could have anything you want what would it be?

    @someonenikon

Hi, welcome to NRF.....you found the "D400 Wishlist" thread immediately.....The answer to your question is in the previous 39 pages...LOL

But, what I would like to see (fantasy only) is a non-mirror body with phase detection AF, 20 FPS, 24MP sensor, Native ISO of 12,800 minimum, fully auto adapter to accept all current "F" mount lenses....for about $1500.

This followed by a new series of non-retro focus wide angel lenses to fit the new thinner body......

Other than height wise the D300 is almost the same size as the D800. Why do we keep having this same discussion?

as you say : (fantasy only)

Nikon don't live in a fantasy world and they are not going to introduce a camera that rivals the D4 for a quarter the price

Nikon know very well, what ever they might do, they will only please, a very small number of the people who are waiting for Godot

The only consistency in the wish list, of the previous 40 pages is fps : The more fps the better

Some people want a camera bigger than then D7100, some want the same size

There is no agreement on MP as people with old computers, don't want too many

ISO? yes the higher the better, but Nikon have never produced a Dx camera that outperforms their best FX

Mirror less? the technology seems a long way off

One thing we are nearly all agreed on, it will come out in the spring or the autumn ( the jury is still out in which year )

Price? yes, a degree of agreement; cheaper than the D800 more expensive than the D7100

Why do we keep having this same discussion?

because, other wise, this eternal thread would die

We should just change the number in the title to D500 when the D400 comes out...

Hopefully the next discussion on the D400 is not whats wrong with it like issues plaguing the D600.
  • spraynprayspraynpray Posts: 6,545Moderator
+1 but I honestly think the D400 will be perfect. I have always thought that making sure it is perfect is part of the reason for the delay.

Not perfect, just able to fulfill the criteria Nikon has for it. What are those criteria? We don't know. ISO, fps, mp, goals, etc.

By perfect I meant no quality issues Donald. Ergonomics will always be subjective and state of the art will always be transient.

Lets keep in mind that I was not talking about this thread or the name of the camera, rather it was about DaveyJ's comment on the size of the D300 vs the D800.

So what is the record for number of posts in a thread, anyway?
    - Ian . . . [D7000, D7100; Nikon glass: 35 f1.8, 85 f1.8, 70-300 VR, 105 f2.8 VR, 12-24 f4; 16-85 VR, 300 f4D, 14E-II TC, SB-400, SB-700 . . . and still plenty of ignorance]
  • MsmotoMsmoto Posts: 5,398Moderator
Mmmmmm.....we have about 73 users on the thread including one who..... well......
    And now 1007 posts......

But, this is all with the help of Nikon.

I do think they are really testing things out, although usually someone will see a pro testing and figure it out. For sure, if it comes out and has an issue as serious as a left focus problem or oil/dirt on the sensor, Nikon is going to be struggling.
