"I don't know what the wise people with the technology head of this forum think but I wonder if the new D400 is actually going to be a full replacement for the D300 & D700 people and it's coming with a D800S sticker?"
I very much doubt that as it is full of contradiction (logically without any technical consideration). Will there be a D800s? Maybe. Will it be the D300s 'replacement'? No. Most people agree that the reason for existence of DX is lower cost, the fact that the cheaper sensor gives a crop factor advantage for wildlife and sports is just lucky . It is like you are saying that the new D400 will have a switch that allows it to take full frame 36mp shots at 5.5fps, but the bad news is that this facility will cause the body to cost 40% more than it would have without it. If you believe that to be a possibility, then the D400 is already here in the D800 or D600/D610.
I would like to know more about the leaks from your Thai friends, but it seems you are saying that even they have no knowledge of the existence of the D400 in the Thailand factory. That is troubling.
Oh, my, how this thread has its own life..... possibly because there are a few of us who are waiting for a D400.
As I think about all this, I am guessing that the two factors talked about, tsunami, floods in Thailand, combined with the D600 issue, really pushed Nikon into a situation they could not have imagined a few years ago. The world economy is also a kicker no one thought was going to be a factor.
With this in mind, I suspect Canon and Nikon are looking at each other, and a new crop sensor pro body will be introduced only if both companies do this. While the legality of collusion is certainly a deterrent to open discussions, it is difficult to prosecute in a court of law a chat at the opera.
Again, we are all guessing, but, the idea of a new pro crop sensor body from Nikon, along with a new full frame (D4x) seems quite possible before the next Olympics. And, Canon will be there as well. Thus, the introduction dates I would pick...10% December 2013, 90% early January 2014.
@Msmoto: My D300s has a shutter count of 135000 and I need a replacement, at least before my photo trips next year. I am so close to buying a D800, and now you say there will be a D400 in January 2014. That could possibly give me more fps, higher pixel density and still smaller files (compared to the D800) at about the same price as a D800. If I could only wait a while. That's an insanely difficult decision...
I wish Nikon could say something about this. At least give us a hint to whether or not the pro dx line is discontinued.

Oh how that would be so nice. It's also one way to let Canon know they are done or plan to continue to develop a pro DX body. Nice way to avoid collusion.

Hi Sanook, It is interesting to hear the inside track on the people working in the Nikon factory, their mentality and the level of their earnings. Strangely, that gives me hope that the D400 is out there somewhere!
My point mainly was that one would not normally buy a 2800 USD D800 if one really wanted a DX at 2000 USD. That is just the high cost to purchase - the weight difference is against it too.
Don't worry about English not being your first language, you're doing fine.
Again the weight difference between the D800 and the D300s is what? 50-60g? Not a good argument. I also don't buy into the DX lenses are lighter argument either. When I had a full DX kit, before moving to FX, my bag wasn't much lighter than it is today. Maybe 300g lighter, tops. Hardly enough to notice on a day hike.
No wise photographer carries every lens they own on a given shoot, I sure don't. I go out with an objective in mind and bring the lens or lenses for the purpose. It makes far more sense to do that, than worry about 100g here and there.

If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.
". ... Most people agree that the reason for existence of DX is lower cost,....
A big advantage for us but not such a big advantage for Nikon, as a lower price also means a lower profit. Given that quite a few people waiting for a D400 have bought D800s. Are Nikon going to spent money developing a new camera and jeopardize profit from an existing camera were the R&D cost have already been covered? It seems not
When will an FX body do "double duty" as also the top DX body? When it gives you as many megapixels in DX crop mode as the top DX prosumer body (D7100) which currently is 24mp. If Expeed 4, additional ram buffer and about a 50mp sensor makes it into a D800x and allows for 8fps in DX at about 24mp you could have a "double duty" camera. The price though may also be double what a D400 would cost! Nevertheless it would be a nice option for Nikon to offer.
but can Nikon get 50 mp to work at ISO 6400+ ? my guess is Nikon will stick to 36 mp and those who want more "reach" will have to buy the Nikon 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR,
If you look at the way Canon has used the same sensors for a long time, Nikon could use the current 36mp with advances to the processor to make the upgrades possible/worthwhile.
With the impending arrival of the Fuji X-E2 with on sensor Phase detection AF, that brings the count to at least 4 Mirrorless cameras with Phase detection AF tech(The Nikon1 are among the number), I think it looks more and more likely that the current batch of DSLRs may actually be the last of this breed of cameras.
If that is true then the D300S replacement must be a Mirrorless camera.
That could explain a lot of what we are seeing in terms of * the delay, * the "merging" of much of the D90/D300 into the D7100 feature set. * The lack of the D400 development "smoke"(rumors) especially in Thailand. (The new D400 mirrorless would be developed in Japan, no?)
I have been playing with my Nikon1-V1 with several AFS lenses mounted and I can report that it is pretty good! With the native Nikon1 Kit Lens its focus is very fast and accurate. I would say even better than my D7000 and kit lens. 10FPS is silly fast !(esp when test shooting a stationary object ! LOL ) I would be very happy with all those Nikon1 features on a Mirrorless D400.

Good idea! This super FX camera could be the new D4X and then there will be a D400 with exactly the same functionality as a D4X in crop mode. That would pretty much cover everything, right?
Good point: most people who want it need the D400 to come in near the D610 price point, not at/above D4. -
To the moderators...what does it take to do a survey on what price point we would like to see the D400 at? Of course, you are going to have to specify features, such as Expeed 4, 24MPX, additional ram buffer, and 8fps. I think that would be interesting to see exactly what percentage of the group would be willing to pay.
