Baker Hotel, Mineral Wells, TX. I wanted the deserted town look: It took forever to get a shot when traffic was not going by.

Another shot of Sunrise on the Cumberland River. It was 39 degrees and I started to think I was crazy for being there. We all go to extremes to get the shot. :)

Hey autofocus, you are definitely not nuts, I would have done the same thing. Lenticular cloud formations are very rare and beautiful. Great shot!

    Food for thought...

    DSC_5206

Literally. The praying mantis was huge, but I wish it was green and not brown, it just makes for a relatively dull photo. I'm not sure if editing can save it...

I think part of the problem is the twig. I wanted to remove it, but that would have probably disturbed the mantis, who probably worked hard to get lunch that day.

Maybe it's a DOF issue, but I have a hard time getting the eyes in focus. For sure the mandibles are in focus, but I thought I'd be able to get more than that in focus.

In any case, I definitely was not ready for this trip so I didn't have my macro lens with me. All I had was the 18-135 and the 35mm 1.8, which I didn't even use because the zoom was so much more practical.

Some times you just get lucky and here is one of them. It was pitch black dark and the D5300 would not focus even at ISO 12800. After giving up on anything auto I switched to spot focus and linked spot metering on the slice of onion as it was the lightest spot on the grill. About the time I was ready to give up a flicker of fire came up and lit the onion up enough the flash got a reading and the camera fired. Hardly any edits to this. The lack of noise is what I find hard to believe. 1/100 sec @ ISO 12800 with built in flash. EXIF data is on flickr.

Of all the grapefruit I've peeled and eaten over well over half a century this is the first that had a very large navel inside like and old style navel orange.
