Proudgeek, had the bear charged you, could you have made it to a safe place in time?
Not likely. We were 45 yards away. I'm sure the bear could have covered that distance in a very short period of time and there was nowhere to go. I'll stress that we were with VERY experienced guides who did this kind of thing nearly every day. While they were not armed, they did carry bear spray and flares, which they assured me had proven adequate over time. I didn't know about their lack of firearms until we were on the beach. I will say that in this place at this time of year risk is low. These bears are well fed and relatively docile as a result. Humans are there pretty frequently and are not considered a threat. Once the salmon stopped running, not sure I'd have felt quite as confident. While they are genetically identical to grizzly bears, they are known as coastal brown bears, which react to humans differently. The term "grizzly" relates to their disposition. Not that it was risk free, but I felt pretty good about it. This outfit runs camping trips on this beach, and someday I hope to go on one (my wife says she'll pass).
Sounds like you were pretty safe then. Grizzly bears generally don't attach humans.
Night Scape
This is the third in my series of three images shot from the same cold end of a dock within a space of a few hours. When I get back from my photo gathering expedition in December, I will post some more images.
@Msmoto: I hear you. I only shoot weddings for friends or I demand to be a second shooting party as I never want to sacrifice creative control–even to the bride and/or groom. I would probably make more money if I adjusted that attitude... @jimo: Love that empty mountain scape, very nice. @kenadams: Cheers! Here's another:
I'll top this set off with Kristina's Smile There are so many more photos but maybe I'll post a few more down the line. The 3rd leg of the day was actually shot in a parking garage. Kristina is also a pretty good actress and conjured up her own tears for some very dramatic images. Maybe later. Thanks for all of your thoughts and comments. Portraiture is not easy. Much respect to the photographers whose job it is to publish daily, weekly, monthly, etc.

Taking advantage of an empty bar here. We could not have asked for better environment at essentially no cost.
