Updating with Specs: Same AF system and Expeed 5 processor as the D5. Touchscreen, around 10fps shooting. Up to 200 continuous shots in RAW mode. new version of SnapBridge with Bluetooth Low Energy with always-on connectivity. It can also capture 4K/UHD video
Some more interesting tidbits: There is flicker reduction like that found on the Canon 7Dm2 (note this is something exclusive to the D500 as the D5 can't do this with stills). The screen tilts (D5's is fixed) It uses one SD card and one XQD card There is electronic vibration reduction when shooting video The center AF point will work down to -4 EV with all other points going down to -3 EV Can record upto ~30min of 4K video (versus ~3 min for D5) Electronic front curtain in mirror up mode (also Qc mode for those folks who care about that like me) Apparently wireless (b/g networks) that I guess are part of the Bluetooth snapbridge Ability to assign a temporary AF mode to the front button (i.e. can dynamically switch AF modes with holding down a button)
Same AF system and Expeed 5 processor as the D5. Around 10fps, 200 shot RAW buffer Bluetooth Low Energy support DX b!tc4es!! This is the D400 we've all been waiting for. They can have my $$$.
Powerful 153-point AF achieves superior subject acquisition performance across a wide range of situations
High-speed continuous shooting at approx. 10 fps for up to 200 shots (14-bit lossless compressed RAW)
Unique benefits of a compact DX system — added agility in telephoto shooting Nikon's DX-format D500 provides an angle of view equivalent to that of a lens with an approx. 1.5x longer focal length*1. This permits telephoto shooting using smaller, lighter lenses with a shorter focal length, while taking advantage of performance that rivals the D5 FX-format flagship model. The camera's agility is also enhanced by the kit lens, AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR, the lightweight 5x normal zoom lens, which weighs only approx. 1340 g/2 lb 15.3 oz*2 when attached to the D500.
4K UHD video, suitable for professional productions The D500 can record 4K UHD (3840 x 2160)/30p/25p/24p as well as 1080/60p video for up to 29 min. 59 s*1, with simultaneous output via HDMI available. It is also possible to generate 4K UHD time-lapse movies within the camera. In Full HD or HD mode, the D500's electronic Vibration Reduction function*2 reduces the effects of camera shake in the horizontal, vertical and rotational directions during hand-held movie recording, while Active D-Lighting preserves details in highlights and shadows to capture footage with natural brightness.
New EXPEED 5 image-processing engine achieves sensitivity up to ISO 51200, expandable to Hi 5 (equivalent to ISO 1640000)
Touch-screen, tilting 8-cm/3.2-in. high-resolution monitor ensures more comfortable shooting for professionals and advanced amateurs
SnapBridge support lets you link with a smart device via Bluetooth® and Wi-Fi®
WT-7/A/B/C Wireless Transmitter (optional) enables high-speed wired/wireless LAN communication
Price and Availability The new Nikon D500 DSLR will be available in March 2016 for a suggested retail price (SRP) of $1,999.95* for the body-only configuration. A kit will also be available, bundled with the versatile AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR lens, for the SRP of $3,069.95*. The MB-D17-battery pack will also be available in March 2016 for the SRP of $449.95* and will add extended battery life and facilitate vertical shooting. The WT-7A Wireless Transmitter will be available in March 2016, for the SRP of $934.95*.
They resolution was bumped down to ~20MP from 24MP, but you gain one extra stop of native ISO compared to the 7200. The buffer and fps are nice, but is there quiet continuous mode??? Is anyone confused as to what the purpose of the blue-tooth phone connection is if you need a separate wifi WT-7A dongle?
Whoa. Look at the viewfinder on this puppy. 1.0x magnification. Reading....
Holy crap, I didn't even notice that, it looks like a D4 sized viewfinder.
If you think about it, the D300s has been largely unchanged (with the exception of video and all) from the D300s, and that came out in 2007 with the D3, kind of how the D500 came out with the D5.
Man, it's been 9 years.
If my D7000 conks out, at least I know I'll have a DX flagship to lean on.
But at least you get 30 minutes. What's interesting for 4K shooters is Panisonics new P&S announced today. A 1" sensor with 5 axis stablization and 4K video for $700. That's pretty darn good.
