The problem I have with the memory banks is that if you change something while shooting then the changes stay in the bank. This is extremely annoying for accidental changes say when a camera is jostling around in a bag or against your body; when you go to quickly shoot a bird, etc. and expect that your settings are what you previously set them, I sometimes find out too late that they have been changed. With the U1/U2, you can quickly twist as you raise it to your eye and not have to worry about the initial settings. For example, I could keep it on U1 and as I want to take a shot quickly twist one notch and back to make sure all settings are reset to those in U1. Its a small thing, but allows for a faster first shot then you could get otherwise if you had to process all of the info in the viewfinder before shooting and then spin either of the main or sub dials to undo the unwanted change. For studio or more predictable shooting it does not matter as you have time to change settings. But for speed reasons alone, I would prefer the dedicated U1/U2 dial positions.
interesting. i started turning off my camera when putting it in my bag because inside the bag, the only button that gets pressed is the af-on button/shutter button so the end result is that the battery will die eventually in a bag.
bouncing against my body... i use an RS strap so i guess i never accidentally hit any buttons.

if it helps you get that first shot quickly then thats great! when i go to an event or a new place i have to absorb the location and do test shots before shooting... so maybe it could help me then

I doubt Nikon are going to change the setting bank system for the pro level cameras because pros are too used to them by now.

But surely it wouldn't be difficult for them to add a "lock" option to individual banks? It would be best of both worlds.

Wont stop me from buying a D500 either way, but for me it would be a step forward in usability and it surely wouldn't be a difficult thing to do...

The ergonomics are different. People who like U1 and U2 enjoy the ability to twist a the mode knob on top of the camera to jump from one to the other. But guess what? That mode knob doesn't exist in the layout used in Nikon's pro level camera bodies. Rather, mode is set by depressing a button and turning the main command dial with your thumb.

As if Nikon couldn't add a U1&U2 mode to the mode button sequence. I used Nikon pro bodies (D300, D700, D800) for many years and I'll take the U1&U2 over "banks" any day of the week.

If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

This is something KR has complained about for many years. They could also put it in the menu where we could move it to the first entry under My Menu. Or they could put it in dedicated buttons or it could be in the menu with the option to move it to one of the customizationable buttons.

We already have one on order! Our guys shoot almost exclusively in video. As a 71 year old I still shoot a lot of stills! Nikon made one of the smartest moves it has ever made getting this camera on the market! It will sell extremely well and other than a 60 frame per sec capability like Canon just announced on their answer to the Nikon D5. My guys just prefer DX format. Also the old school photographers who don't use video have actually cost Nikon some new customers. Regardless whether this is your camera or not it was an essential move for Nikon!
The underwater housing and lens we are buying for this rig cost more than the camera body by a significant margin!

What an excellent image. Very nicely done. Your right, the D7200 is an excellent camera. I still love to use my D7100 and it consistently provides what I expect - good images with DR and IQ.

I'm surprised we haven't heard anything from someone that visited the Nikon Event at B&H today. Was hoping to hear from some hands on participants.

So who is getting one ? show of hands ... :-h
I am! Pre-ordered the day it came out. Wasn't intending to go back to DX... former plan was to upgrade D800 to D810... but these specs were irresistible. Should mate very well with my 300mm PF.
This is something KR has complained about for many years. They could also put it in the menu where we could move it to the first entry under My Menu. Or they could put it in dedicated buttons or it could be in the menu with the option to move it to one of the customizationable buttons.
They could still add the U1/U2 to the menu even after release via firmware upgrade... but they won't. Too bad, would be so helpful in switching between my wildlife & landscape settings.
Only other downside I can see with this camera, at least for me, is that the shutter reportedly is not quiet like the D810's. Hoping it's at least quieter than D800 which scares away birds.

Just got back from the launch event. To me it sounded pretty quiet. The same as my 7200. Nothing like the D800. In fact at 10fps it was pretty soothing :-)

Sorry, no pics allowed using the camera. No RAW files until the release date. This pre-release D500 didn't have the automatic focus fine tune, so couldn't see that. The guy said the face priority is awesome, same as the D5. Yeah, it looked good to me too. The autofocus system is blazing fast, 90% viewfinder coverage.

I went to the Adorama event. It was well attended but not the packed sell out I was expecting. It also appeared to be attended by two ends of the spectrum. At one end, you had those interested in the D5 or on the other, novice photographers that didn't seem to understand the need for a D500. As for myself, a longtime D400 hold out, was doing backflips while tears of joy ran down my face. The 10 fps, the edge to edge focusing, the high ISO capability, in that oh so familiar D300 build quality was more than I could handle. I had to keep pinching myself to believe it was for real. It certainly isn't a camera for everyone, but if you owned and loved a D300 like I did, I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Stop that !! .. making me feel like doing back flips too !! I am too old for that ....

I am overjoyed to hear that! Some guy at CES had said it wasn't as quiet as D810, and it was confirmed by Nikon in that Q/A document that it isn’t as quiet due to “a mechanical structure that was adopted to to enable shooting at 10 fps”. But if it's at least as quiet as D7200 I'm joining the back-flip folks!

Please let us know how it sounds like when you get your camera!! :-)
    Will do! :)

As one who rarely worries about the quiet factor....would use mirrorless in the "quiet" venues, I am ready to pre-order my D500.

I just looked through my fav recent photos... the subjects and situations I had most fun shooting ... They are Macro, Birding, nightstreet, portraits, Looks like no camera would suit in all situations.. but the closest would be the D750 and the D500. I can see why there will be many deciding between them... not only is the price similar. but they are so complementary.

I can already imagine how much easier it will be to capture images like the ones below with a D500... ... guys tell me i need a D500... :o3
